LAS VEGAS 2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the Inaugural AC Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 7.042/197.28, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.080/195.85, Was #27
Right Lane: Jamey Ober Runs 8.784/110.36, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.205/191.02, Was #31

12:28 PM Temperatures are cooler today than during yesterday's afternoon session, but those outside the field will need very good runs to get in against Jeg Coughlin's 7.013 bump time. Bo steps up, but not far enough.

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.175/192.38, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.214/191.35, Was #32
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 7.103/194.46, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.121/194.32, Was #29

So far all of the sixty-foot times have been off the mark, 1.060 or slower. Should be below 1.03 for a reasonable shot at a six.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.094/195.39, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.121/194.32, Was #30
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 7.100/194.24, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.078/194.74, Was #27

Johnson's team is still looking for the key to making the hemi engines run as competitively as their wedge engines did last year.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 6.992/196.82, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.088/195.51, Was #28
Right Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.094/193.52, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.056/194.41, Was #25

Blakeney made a hard launch, with a 1.026 60-foot time, and bumped Jeg. Klein had a 1.033, but fell off the pace on the top end.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.961/198.06, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.005/197.28, Was #15
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 7.007/197.57, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.028/196.76, Was #19

WJ bumps Rickie Smith by matching his ET and bettering his speed. His 60-foot time was only 1.046, by the way. However, Krisher parlayed a 1.046 short time into a top-four elapsed time, so the 60-foot time isn't an absolute indicator.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.044/195.05, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.050/195.25, Was #25
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 7.095/194.91, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.032/195.45, Was #20

Here, for example, Morgan's 1.030 and Rivera's 1.040 short times lead to not-qualified elapsed times.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.066/195.70, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.074/194.66, Was #27
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.031/195.36, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.018/195.73, Was #19

Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 7.055/195.76, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.013/196.07, Was #18

Left Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 7.060/195.76, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.041/196.02, Was #22
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.983/197.19, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.007/196.19, Was #17

Smith fulfills his teammate chores for Jim Yates by bumping WJ from the field. Now the bump is Darrell Alderman's 6.999.

Left Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 7.023/195.76, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.040/196.33, Was #21
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.019/197.25, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.999/197.80, Was #16

No help here...

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 7.009/196.50, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.997/196.02, Was #15
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.021/196.67, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.989/197.33, Was #11

No help here, either, but both are already in - as are all those still in the staging lane.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.003/196.73, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.993/197.25, Was #14
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.990/198.17, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.981/197.51, Was #8

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.984/197.62, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.992/196.90, Was #12
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.007/196.96, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.979/197.19, Was #7

Ozzie joins the short list of those who have improved this session.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.974/197.54, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.985/197.08, Was #11
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.006/196.90, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.976/197.25, Was #6

Marnell makes an impressive improvement to move to the top half of the ladder.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.949/197.77, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.955/197.68, Was #2
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.964/198.32, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.967/198.06, Was #5

Smith's run should have been a clue, Yates steps right into the top spot with a crushing run in the middle of the day. Nice pass by Hammonds - didn't move up the ladder any, but it's a good sign that he's ready to race again this weekend.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.965/198.35, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.954/198.41, Was #2
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.975/197.65, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.963/197.62, Was #4

That's it for now, there's just one session remaining for Warren Johnson to keep his 286-race qualifying string intact. The last time WJ failed to qualify was at Gainesville, in 1987.
