ENNIS, Texas - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 34th annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Kelly Clontz No Time, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.936/194.18, Was #13
Right Lane: Jianna Salinas Runs 11.345/71.08, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.006/188.36, Was #15

5:08 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 36 percent, barometer 29.11 inches, adjusted altitude 3,381 feet, track temperature 112 degrees.

The tree comes down, Clontz hits the throttle and the bike never moves. Salinas gets about 200 feet out, the bike gets out of the groove and heads for the wall, then she backs off the throttle about 300 feet out.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 6.878/194.10, Now #11; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.944/192.19, Now #12; No Prior Run

Arana jr. goes down the groove with a good pass but doesn't improve. Arana Sr. makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Ryan Oehler Runs 6.992/192.99, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.866/195.34, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.830/194.44, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.872/193.24, Was #10

Oehler slows from his earlier attempt and stays in the ninth spot. Johnson makes an impressive pass and moves up to the third spot in the order.

Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.055 sec., 330ft-2.838, 660ft-4.354/161.61 mph, 1,000ft-5.684.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.863/196.76, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.857/194.44, Was #8
Right Lane: Angie Smith Runs 6.937/193.24, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.871/196.13, Was #10

Krawiec makes a decent pass for the conditions but doesn't improve. Smith makes a decent pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.896/195.65, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.851/196.96, Was #6
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 6.861/197.10, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.853/195.17, Was #7

Not much improvement this round, Johnson the only rider to improve so far. Hines makes a clean pass but doesn't improve. Stoffer makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Scotty Pollacheck Runs 6.847/197.65, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.850/193.32, Was #5
Right Lane: Jerry Savoie Runs 6.807/197.25, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.790/196.13, Was #2

We see some improvement on this pair. Pollacheck goes down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the fourth spot. Savoie makes an impressive pass for the conditions, doesn't improve, but is quickest of the round so far.

Left Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 6.865/195.08, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.847/194.74, Was #5
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.864/197.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.776/200.26, Was #1

Smith was explaining last night that they had found the problem they were dealing with in Charlotte. When they removed the engine after the race they found a broken frame. his performance is much better this weekend.

A good side-by-side, both down the groove with decent passes but neither rider improves.

Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.083 sec., 330ft-2.883, 660ft-4.403/161.04 mph, 1,000ft-5.730.

Angelle Sampey's incremental times: 60ft-1.054 sec., 330ft-2.849, 660ft-4.378/160.37 mph, 1,000ft-5.717.

This is Smith's 5th number one qualifying start this year and the 36th of his career.
