Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 34th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 3.939/326.00, Now #1; Best prior run: 8.590/83.07, Was #13
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.944/327.90, Now #2; Best prior run: 11.039/75.12, Was #15

5:02 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 75 percent, barometer 29.59 inches, adjusted altitude 2,583 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Both drivers had strong runs down the groove that took Johnson to the top spot in the order and Langdon to the number two spot for now.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 9.648/81.69, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.970/86.96, Was #14
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 3.960/321.12, Now #4; Best prior run: 8.756/77.86, Was #15

Lindberg launched and the car smoked the rear tires right away. Hagan had a good run in his car and moved up 11 spots in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 3.907/323.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.752/84.20, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Smith Runs 8.512/81.61, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.691/87.72, Was #13

Smith launched, shook the rear tires at 60 feet and the car shut down. Force had a good run in the left lane and moved to the top of the order for now.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 3.953/331.12, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.064/269.67, Was #11
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.707/175.84, Was #12

Pedregon's car made an odd sound shen he did his burnout. He stopped on the track about 200 feet from the starting line and the car would not move. Pedregon got out of his car and climbed over the wall so Force could make his qualifying attempt.

Force had a good run down the track and moved up seven spots in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 3.951/324.36, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.029/317.72, Was #11
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 3.948/326.56, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.996/302.96, Was #9

This was a pari of good, side-by-side runs. Tasca moved up six spots in the order, Capps moved up five spots.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.378/233.56, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.015/314.83, Was #11
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 3.912/324.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.968/318.69, Was #9

Todd's car slowed and started trailing smoke from about 660 feet on. Wilkerson had a very good run and moved up seven spots in the qualifying order.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.033/267.91, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.981/320.81, Was #10
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 3.993/284.51, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.954/322.88, Was #8

Both cars launched fine and both looked good to 660 feet. After that, both cars lost power and both coasted the rest of the way. At the end of the second qualifying session, Courtney Force is in the number one spot in the order.
