BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 31st annual NHRA SpringNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 14.805/62.31, Now #2
Right Lane: Richard Townsend Runs 4.876/166.11, Now #1

4:54 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 30.07 inches, adjusted altitude 1,131 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Simpson was up in smoke on the hit. Townsend dropped a cylinder or two and he was close to the wall when he had to lift.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.151/283.49, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim Campbell Runs 8.750/73.79, Now #3

Campbell lost traction at about 200 feet. Diehl was very close to the centerline just before the finish.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.624/169.55, Now #3
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 6.979/88.97, Now #4

Tasca had traction troubles before the 330-foot mark. Wilkerson couldn't keep all of the candles lit.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 3.963/299.53, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 8.333/81.84, Now #6

Force was off the throttle shortly after the launch. Pedregon made a good looking pass, but he started trailing heavy smoke at the finish. Cruz Pedregon was charged with an oildown, #3 for the season. That will cost 15 points.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.055/305.29, Now #3
Right Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 4.006/302.41, Now #2

This was a good looking pass for both drivers...better than the numbers show.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 4.801/180.67, Now #6
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 3.921/313.15, Now #1

Langdon pedaled it early and he was off the throttle around half track. Hight makes a good looking pass to move to the top of the order for now. Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.868 sec., 330ft-2.245, 660ft-3.157/284.87 mph.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.010/313.37, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.806/147.31, Now #8

Capps overpowered the track around 500 feet and he lifted. Todd made a good looking pass.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.157/242.76, Now #8
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 3.984/298.40, Now #3

Johnson hazed the tires at about 600 feet. A trouble-free pass by Hagan. Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.261, 660ft-3.199/276.75 mph.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 8.752/82.32, Now #17
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.065/266.27, Now #7

Force lost traction and she was off the throttle about 100 feet out. Beckman's chutes deployed right at the 660-foot mark.
