Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 62nd annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Steve Franke Runs 6.310/228.65, Now #20; Best prior run: 8.793/98.64, Was #23

2:09 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 2,689 feet, track temperature 113 degrees.

Doug Gordon 5.472 is number one and Todd Robertson is on the bump spot at 5.735.

Franke's car is soft off the line and then bangs the blower right at the finish line.

Steve Franke's incremental times: 60ft-1.091 sec., 330ft-2.826, 660ft-4.175/182.95 mph, 1,000ft-5.332.

Left Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 5.684/256.99, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.849/117.70, Was #22
Right Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 5.573/254.71, Now #11; Best prior run: 8.395/122.46, Was #23

Leanders is usually well towards the top of the ladder at this point. Brown is still getting his new car sorted out.

Leanders is away first and finally gets a reasonable pass to put him on the bump.

Brown was on an even better pass until there is smoke coming out form under the car right after the 1000 foot lights. He still moves way up to the #11 spot.

Ulf Leanders' incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.559, 660ft-3.778/203.95 mph, 1,000ft-4.811.
Bryan Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.961 sec., 330ft-2.496, 660ft-3.690/208.39 mph, 1,000ft-4.703.

Left Lane: Phil Esz No Time, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.773/260.47, Was #20
Right Lane: Joshua Haskett Runs 6.269/237.88, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.021/210.11, Was #23

Esz is late getting the engine started and has problems getting the converter car to move forward. The starter tells Haskett to make a single.

Haskett leaves the line and quickly has to do a pedal slap and that will cost him some necessary ET. A much better run, but well off the pace.

Joshua Haskett's incremental times: 60ft-1.045 sec., 330ft-2.862, 660ft-4.198/187.73 mph, 1,000ft-5.324.

Left Lane: Chris King Runs 5.727/245.23, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.772/246.30, Was #19
Right Lane: Nancy Matter No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.783/211.83, Was #21

Matter's engine goes silent before moving up to do a burnout. King's engine bogged in his burnout.

King has strong number down low, but starts to trail smoke from the engine well before the 1000 foot lights.

Chris King's incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.524, 660ft-3.755/200.65 mph, 1,000ft-4.815.

Left Lane: Steve Burck Runs 11.872/58.05, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.692/257.48, Was #17
Right Lane: Todd Robertson Runs 5.731/225.90, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.735/248.71, Was #19

Burck's car is lazy off the line and he slows.

Robertson was on a better pass, but he has engine smoke too down track and slows.

Todd Robertson's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.521, 660ft-3.741/202.24 mph, 1,000ft-4.794.

Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.691/255.15, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.652/257.09, Was #13
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.688/256.80, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.652/256.45, Was #14

Ulf Leanders is on the bump spot at 5.684 and will stay there, as the balance of the field is already qualified.

Two clean passes, close to their prior best. No changes in position.

Tony Bogolo's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.537, 660ft-3.762/202.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.808.
DJ Cox Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-1.014 sec., 330ft-2.569, 660ft-3.778/205.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.812.

Left Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.581/261.62, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.538/263.62, Was #9
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.767/263.31, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.631/261.17, Was #12

Thompson is away first, but Januik is quickly on by. He makes a good pass, but doesn't improve.

Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.524, 660ft-3.715/208.84 mph, 1,000ft-4.725.
Clint Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-1.018 sec., 330ft-2.678, 660ft-3.895/206.29 mph, 1,000ft-4.913.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 10.757/81.74, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.501/265.59, Was #5
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 8.096/148.59, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.555/261.12, Was #10

East Coast vs. West Coast!

Big low end incrementals, but the track wouldn't hold the power. Lots of shake and both cars are done early.

Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.948 sec., 330ft-2.777, 660ft-5.066/092.01 mph, 1,000ft-7.880.
Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.791, 660ft-4.854/116.80 mph, 1,000ft-6.613.

Left Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 13.944/78.58, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.479/251.95, Was #3
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 5.605/265.48, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.538/264.13, Was #8

Lombardo shakes the tire loose at the green. Burkhart picks up a little speed, but loses a little ET to stay #8.

Phil Burkart's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.560, 660ft-3.751/208.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.757.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 28.505/34.54, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.474/267.96, Was #2
Right Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.544/265.33, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.534/264.34, Was #7

Whiteley shakes early and lifts.

Bohl runs close to his prior best on a clean and straight pass.

Andy Bohl's incremental times: 60ft-0.968 sec., 330ft-2.496, 660ft-3.686/208.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.696.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.466/269.08, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.472/268.49, Was #1
Right Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 12.069/62.58, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.481/269.08, Was #4

While most of the field was a bunch slower, Gordon fires a shot and moves even further away from #2 to take the final best RET and speed and cement #1 with a bullit.

Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.941 sec., 330ft-2.462, 660ft-3.637/211.73 mph, 1,000ft-4.629.

2:44 p.m. Ulf Leanders is on the bump spot at 5.684.
