Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 62nd annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Steve Franke Runs 8.793/98.64, Now #23; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ulf Leanders No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.849/117.70, Was #21

10:21 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 29.28 inches, adjusted altitude 2,313 feet.

Annie Whiteley is number one at 5.474 and Phil Esz is on the bump spot at 5.844.

Leaders didn't do the burnout and Franke will make a single. He leaves hard and has the Camaro drive towards the center line.

Left Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 10.904/56.95, Now #22; Best prior run: 8.395/122.46, Was #22
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.538/263.62, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.687/140.50, Was #19

Januik had the parachute rattle out yesterday and it's Brown's turn today. He has on open before the 330 lights and drives a long way before lifting.

Januik gets a full pass this time and it's a good one. He powers on down the track into the top four for now.

Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.501, 660ft-3.683/210.21 mph, 1,000ft-4.688.

Left Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 5.783/211.83, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.492/175.52, Was #19
Right Lane: Chris King Runs 5.772/246.30, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.996/245.99, Was #18

Jonnie Lindberg is on the bump spot at 5.771.

They both run their best passes of the weekend, but it looked like Matter's engine went South before the finish line. King is just 0.001 off of the bump.

10:30 a.m. Looks like oil in the left lane.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 5.481/269.08, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.771/261.62, Was #16
Right Lane: Phil Esz Runs 5.773/260.47, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.844/241.63, Was #19

10:44 a.m. Back to qualifying.

Esz is making his second pass in competition and picks up a bunch of ET and resets his personal best. He only moves up to #18.

Lindberg gets a full pass this time and runs hard into the #3 spot with the best speed so far.

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.501, 660ft-3.665/213.87 mph, 1,000ft-4.648.
Phil Esz's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.566, 660ft-3.798/200.62 mph, 1,000ft-4.859.

Left Lane: Todd Robertson Runs 9.319/96.40, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.735/248.71, Was #16
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 13.147/51.45, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.692/257.48, Was #15

Two broken runs. The leave hard and then are quickly off the pedal and coasting.

Left Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.652/256.45, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.657/254.42, Was #13
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.678/255.05, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.667/253.99, Was #14

Two clean passes and both cars basically run close to their prior best.

DJ Cox Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.998 sec., 330ft-2.536, 660ft-3.743/205.26 mph, 1,000ft-4.776.
Chris Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.552, 660ft-3.764/204.08 mph, 1,000ft-4.798.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.512/265.80, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.636/253.18, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 8.495/105.72, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.652/257.09, Was #12

Payne makes a strong leave and powers on down the track on a much better pass to move up to the #4 spot. He had problems getting the chute out yesterday and just clipped the wall. Today, the Camaro flies on past the finish line and doesn't get one chute out until just before the sand trap and then disappears in a cloud of dust. The top end guys report that the car is upright and Payne is out and OK. Only his wallet is hurt.

Bogolo didn't make a pass in the second session yesterday and the car is lazy off the line this time. He gives it before the 330 lights and coasts on down.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.475, 660ft-3.659/210.34 mph, 1,000ft-4.665.

10:54 a.m. Time out for extraction from the kitty litter.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 11.198/80.01, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.631/261.17, Was #11
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.472/268.49, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.580/262.90, Was #8

11:37 a.m. Well, that took a while!

Thompson is off the pedal right off the line.

Gordon is long gone with a near season best ET and speed to take over the top spot.

Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.468, 660ft-3.642/211.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.635.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 5.538/264.13, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.601/262.90, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.501/265.59, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.535/261.42, Was #6

Great looking side by side runs with both cars running in the low fifties.

Barton moves up a spot to #5 and Burkhart moves into the top half of the field in #7. Nice!

Phil Burkart's incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.487, 660ft-3.680/208.42 mph, 1,000ft-4.687.
Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.954 sec., 330ft-2.485, 660ft-3.664/210.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.661.

Left Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.534/264.34, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.592/264.55, Was #10
Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 9.100/94.18, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.479/251.95, Was #3

Lombardo didn't run in session two yesterday and is off the throttle quickly today.

Bohl gets the power down and runs strong to the finish line. He moves three spots up the ladder to the current #7 spot.

Andy Bohl's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.475, 660ft-3.670/207.82 mph, 1,000ft-4.683.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.570/261.72, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.555/261.12, Was #10
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.522/267.11, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.474/267.96, Was #2

Two clean strong passes, but neither car will improve.

Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.962 sec., 330ft-2.506, 660ft-3.698/208.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.712.
Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.954 sec., 330ft-2.502, 660ft-3.684/210.73 mph, 1,000ft-4.681.

11:47 a.m. Doug Gordon is number one at 5.472 and Todd Robertson is on the bump spot at 5.735.
