John Castro Opens 2014 SoCal Super Street Season with Win at Barona
By Bob Johnson

BARONA, Calif. -- John Castro opened the 2014 Southern California Super Street Association series with a big win over defending series champion Jeff Lindstrom, in a classic 1969 Chevy Nova verses '69 Ford Mustang final round at Barona 1/8 Mile Dragstrip. Castro ran 6.905 seconds, 106.37 mph (6.90 index) to Lindstrom's second best of 7.04, 103.61.

Fred Murphy captured the top qualifying spot of the SID'S Auto body in La Mesa-sponsored event, running a 6.909, 107.30 with his Chevy Vega wagon. John Castro was second, and Brian Mendenhall was third, both running 6.91 times. The top qualifying shot for Murphy didn't help during eliminations, though, as he red-lighted to Val Houmard.

Quarterfinal racing opened with Lindstrom running a 6.903 to stop John Sapone, Castro and Ernie Macias had nearly identical reaction times, but Castro advanced with his .02 second better ET. Randy Guitar popped a .006 reaction time with his trusty '57 Chevy and stopped Dennis Blehm's Nova after recording a .004 reaction. Val Houmard put her '84 El Camino into the semifinals on a 6.890 after a .005 reaction time.

Lindstrom, driving the John Parrino Mustang, showed he was going to be a force to deal with in the final as he cut a perfect reaction time and took the semifinal win over Houmard 6.95, 103.63 to Val's -011 red light. Castro went to the final in a double break-out contest with Guitar, 6.88 to a 6.85.

Castro, who also won the Bakersfield Bracket Bash earlier in the year, put his Nova in the winner's circle at Barona with his win over Lindstrom, and will carry the points lead into the next event, scheduled for July 12-13, 2014 at Fontana's Auto Club Dragway. Castro credits Sid's Auto Body, Mickey Thompson Tires, Mechanix Wear, DRW Transmission, Bullet Fabrication, and the Service Center for his successful weekend. He also thanked his Mother, daughters Kaylyn and Clarissa, and son Tony for their help and support.

The July 12-13 event at Fontana will be sponsored by Tim and Donna Daniel Racing.
