Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 45th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mark Rogers Runs 5.863/246.48, Now #12; Best prior run: 16.427/45.54, Was #19

6:04 p.m. Dale Brand is on the bump spot at 9.509.

Nice run by Rogers to bump Brand.

Now John Headley is on the bump spot at 7.134.

Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.567/261.62, Now #2; Best prior run: 9.509/95.81, Was #17
Right Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 5.669/256.84, Now #10; Best prior run: 11.174/116.60, Was #19

Brand was just bumped from the field.

Both cars used up a little of their lane, Simonton close to the centerline at the stripe, but neither had major problems and both bumped into the field, Brand going all the way to #2.

That bumped Headley and Rob Pfeister from the field, putting Matt Gill on the bump spot at 6.029.

Dale Brand's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.490, 660ft-3.687/207.72 mph, 1,000ft-4.707.
Cassie Simonton's incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.553, 660ft-3.759/205.91 mph, 1,000ft-4.792.

Left Lane: John Headley Runs 5.809/247.57, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.134/113.73, Was #18
Right Lane: Marie Ferriolo Runs 7.897/82.34, Now #19; Best prior run: 9.749/51.93, Was #19

Ferriolo's car shook and apparently popped the burst panel, the chutes out before the 1,000-foot marker. Headley also popped the burst panel, but he was past the finish line when that happened, the pressure relief hatch sailing high in the air. He also left a trail of "stuff" in the shutdown area.

That bumped Gill, putting Jonnie Lindberg on the bump spot at 5.992.

John Headley's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.561, 660ft-3.822/196.02 mph, 1,000ft-4.900.

Left Lane: Rob Pfeister Runs 9.050/91.95, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.378/166.01, Was #18
Right Lane: Paul Noakes No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.684/257.87, Was #12

Noakes rolled out of the beams (or was never staged). Pfeister shook in the first 300 feet and slowed.

Left Lane: Matt Gill Runs 5.759/232.39, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.029/253.85, Was #17
Right Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.633/257.92, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.680/255.29, Was #11

Gill was the last car in the lanes with a chance to bump Lindberg and he did just that, improving nicely over his run yesterday. Meanwhile, Pomponio also improved, moving into the top half of the field for now.

Now Mark Rogers is on the bump spot at 5.863.

Matt Gill's incremental times: 60ft-0.965 sec., 330ft-2.525, 660ft-3.747/204.66 mph, 1,000ft-4.788.
Dan Pomponio's incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.514, 660ft-3.730/203.86 mph, 1,000ft-4.762.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 5.840/260.36, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.992/258.47, Was #17
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.546/264.75, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.644/252.99, Was #10

Either Lindberg or Rogers will go into the final qualifying session as part of the field, but not both, and bumping be over for this session regardless of what Lindberg does.

Lindberg improved just enough to bump Rogers, replacing him on the bump spot. Meanwhile, Harker made a very nice run to move all the way up to the #2 spot.

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.677, 660ft-3.933/202.45 mph, 1,000ft-4.972.
Steve Harker's incremental times: 60ft-1.005 sec., 330ft-2.513, 660ft-3.692/210.21 mph, 1,000ft-4.696.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 10.375/79.58, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.836/255.24, Was #15

Now we are working on shuffling the top fifteen qualifiers.

Ferro launched, shook, headed for the wall and lifted. No change.

Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.509/261.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.634/260.41, Was #9
Right Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 7.420/94.12, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.631/258.91, Was #7

Now we are working on the top nine.

Bohl popped the burst panel just past half track. Hool made a very strong run and he's now #2.

Kris Hool's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.450, 660ft-3.634/209.46 mph, 1,000ft-4.649.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.543/261.47, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.579/260.06, Was #6
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.701/252.61, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.592/254.86, Was #7

Last pair. Tony Bogolo chose not to make a run in this session, safely tenth.

Nice run by Payne, his best of the event. Whitely made a good run, but lost ground to Payne in the middle of the run.


Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.573/258.71, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.573/256.11, Was #6
Right Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 7.958/111.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.498/266.27, Was #1

Last pair. Veney made another nice run, duplicating his first-session ET to the thousandth, with a better speed. Leanders had a strong launch, with a 0.963 60-foot time, but he slowed before half track.

Todd Veney's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.493, 660ft-3.685/207.50 mph, 1,000ft-4.705.
