Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.103/312.71, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.109/312.35, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.115/314.97, Was #10

12:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 28.91 inches, adjusted altitude 2,892 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

This could be a final round matchup, but they get to go first today because Force had a huge engine explosion yesterday and Capps smoked the tires.

Two solid runs and a nice side-by-side show.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.332, 660ft-3.320/262.64 mph.
Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.341, 660ft-3.323/264.29 mph.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.171/287.47, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.257/289.88, Now #15; No Prior Run

Burkart's tires bit on the burnout, probably not what he expected. However, it didn't appear to hurt his run a bit. Haddock's car started trailing a lot of piston smoke as he neared the stripe. Track crew checked, no oil on the track.

Left Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 4.243/251.91, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.959/122.81, Now #17; No Prior Run

This pair will establish a bump time.

Russo's car was making strange flames and he clicked it off. Crawford made it to the stripe under power, posting a career-best ET.

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 4.257.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.243/287.72, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.077/311.20, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.115/306.46, Was #12

Nice run by Gray, right down the groove. Diehl didn't have any obvious problems, but was well back at the stripe.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.138/307.16, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.078/313.07, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.077/309.20, Was #9

Josh Crawford is now on the bump spot at 4.243.

Two more full passes, Beckman a thousandth slower than he as yesterday.

Now Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.243.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.932/156.03, Now #19; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.979/93.67, Now #21; No Prior Run

Pedregon was the "unlucky 13th qualifier" in yesterday's 12-car provisional field, missing the cut by four thousandths of a second.

Both cars started rattling the tires halfway through their runs and it sounded like there was a POP from Bode's car.

Both are now down to one more chance to qualify.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.165/145.14, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.118/301.81, Was #13
Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 8.229/72.35, Now #22; No Prior Run

The track was checked and was clear.

Downing shook early, Densham got about half way and started hazing the tires. Densham was already in and failed to improve, but Downing is down to one last chance to qualify, later today.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.118/308.50, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.071/314.31, Was #7
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.480/213.40, Now #19; No Prior Run

Tasca got off to a good start, but midway through the run the pipes started spraying raw fuel and the car got very loose. Wilkerson made a full pass, but failed to improve.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.061/315.05, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.043/319.52, Was #4
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.422/200.80, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.065/309.84, Was #6

Pedregon started hazing the tires in the middle of the run. Hagan made a nice, full pass, best of the session so far.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.314, 660ft-3.284/266.00 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.052/314.75, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.028/317.49, Was #3
Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 7.795/74.22, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.065/314.17, Was #5

Head lost traction in the first 100 feet. Hight went right down the groove with the quickest run of the session so far.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.308, 660ft-3.275/267.27 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.019/314.83, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.024/318.69, Was #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.039/314.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.015/318.62, Was #1

These two had the two best runs yesterday, so they got to go last today.

They were the two quickest of this session as well, Worsham grabbing the three points for quickest of the session.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.297, 660ft-3.249/271.02 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.303, 660ft-3.263/268.22 mph.
