Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Peter Russo Runs 8.061/77.50, Now #22; No Prior Run

3:34 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 28.84 inches, adjusted altitude 3,043 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 4.575.

Russo did not make a run yesterday. His chute shook out almost immediately and he started spinning the tires, then he lifted.

Left Lane: Grant Downing Runs 4.240/291.07, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.648/111.74, Was #20
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.299/289.45, Now #11; No Prior Run

Yesterday, Downing spun the tires and Diehl appeared to break the throttle cable.

Both drivers got down the track today, both got in the field (for now) and they almost met at thew finish line, Diehl close to the line on the top half of his run and Downing's car making a hard move to the left as he neared the stripe.

Both stayed in their own lane, both runs are legal, bumping Haddock and Phil Burkhart from the field.

Now Josh Crawford is on the bump spot at 4.441.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.065/314.17, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.643/124.41, Was #21
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.118/301.81, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.469/114.76, Was #22

These two ran as a pair yesterday and both smoked the tires.

Today, both made full runs and bumped into the field, Head going all the way to #1.

Chad Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.286/266.58 mph.
Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.337, 660ft-3.311/260.97 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.256/255.48, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.544/133.00, Was #22
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.071/314.31, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.470/133.65, Was #21

These two also smoked their tires yesterday.

Lots of smoke on the top end - looked like a bunch of pistons were sacrificed. Bode's smoke was before the stripe, Wilkerson's was after. IN the slow-motion replay, there was a flash of flame from the vicinity of Bode's supercharger with about 200 feet to go.

Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.339, 660ft-3.372/247.75 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.324, 660ft-3.290/266.06 mph.

Wilkerson bumped Grant Downing from the field, putting Del Worsham on the bump spot at 4.186.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.065/309.84, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.940/155.74, Was #21
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.122/303.84, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.419/132.56, Was #22

Two more day-one tire-smokers and two more good runs, Cruz going to the #2 spot, Tony closer to the bump at 10th.

That bumped Worsham and Jeff Arend from the field, putting Ron Capps on the bump spot at 4.146.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.163/294.56, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.863/168.43, Was #22
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.152/264.70, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.719/173.65, Was #21

Almost every car that's come up in this session has bumped into the field, and we are still several pairs of cars from getting to the "already-qualified" drivers.

These two were mixing up cylinders and leaving a lot of tire haze during their runs, DeJoria almost hitting the wall, close enough for the air from the car to kick up a lot of dust. Neither driver got into the field, so they will start over tomorrow.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 8.310/72.59, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.575/203.71, Was #22
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.655/188.94, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.462/266.53, Was #21

Haddock smoked the tires about 100 feet out, with a small backfire that pushed the hood burst panel out. Burkhart's car made a hard move toward the wall about 300 feet out and he had to lift to stay off the concrete. Then the Safety Safari convoy went to work in Burkhart's lane.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.080/308.43, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.161/277.03, Was #14
Right Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 4.524/208.81, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.441/256.94, Was #20

Crawford was down a couple of cylinders immediately, but Arend's "Mooneyes" tribute car went right down the left lane and into the top half of the field.

That bumped Capps, putting Matt Hagan on the bump spot at 4.128.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.611/95.07, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.115/306.46, Was #9
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.024/318.69, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.186/293.98, Was #16

Gray lost traction after a couple hundred feet, but Worsham rocketed straight down the right-lane groove and right to the top of the list.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.301, 660ft-3.255/270.92 mph.

Now Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.301, 660ft-3.255/270.92 mph.

That puts Tony Pedregon on the bump spot at 4.122/303.84.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 30.514/0.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.115/314.97, Was #9
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 8.196/74.17, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.146/311.20, Was #14

Force's car popped the supercharger almost immediately, the "bugcatcher" sitting askew after the concussion. Meanwhile, Capps had a strong 0.898 60-foot time, then went up in smoke. That leaves Force safely in the field and Capps on the outside, where he will have to start over tomorrow.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.015/318.62, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.105/304.12, Was #8
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.043/319.52, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.128/306.95, Was #13

Hagan is the last driver in line with a shot at bumping Tony Pedregon from the field.

Nice show for the spectators, Force went to #1 with ease, but Hagan got the win light and bumped Pedregon from the provisional field.

Now Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.118, but the last two cars in line are both already qualified.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.889 sec., 330ft-2.297, 660ft-3.249/270.92 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.317, 660ft-3.274/269.89 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 6.336/101.49, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.077/309.20, Was #7
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.028/317.49, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.096/314.09, Was #9

Last pair. Beckman was up in smoke about 300 feet out, but Hight steamed right down the right lane, into the #3 spot.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.432, 660ft-4.206/119.88 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.302, 660ft-3.257/269.83 mph.
