Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 13th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Buddy Domingue Runs 5.673/245.63, Now #19; Best prior run: 12.643/85.32, Was #21

5:45 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 21 percent, barometer 27.91 inches, adjusted altitude 4,372 feet.

Domingue makes a full pass but can't make the show.

Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.761/226.92, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.753/232.07, Was #20
Right Lane: Ashley Sanford Runs 8.568/95.90, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.760/244.52, Was #21

Sanford got out of the groove, started heading for the centerline, then backed off the throttle about 300 feet out. Miersch made a clean pass but did not improve.

Left Lane: Eugene Tumbarello Runs 5.711/253.99, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.642/256.06, Was #17
Right Lane: William Litton Runs 12.245/74.98, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.644/245.27, Was #18

Litton goes up in smoke at the hit and his weekend is done. Tumbarello makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.533/255.63, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.583/253.23, Was #16
Right Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 13.456/78.57, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.575/254.76, Was #15

Ashwell goes up in smoke at the hit and has to back off the throttle.Shields makes his quickest pass of the weekend and gets off the bump spot.

Left Lane: Megan McKernan Runs 5.491/265.17, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.490/264.86, Was #14
Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.418/255.43, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.488/256.94, Was #13

Ahten makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the 11th spot for now. McKernan makes a decent pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Don St. Arnaud Runs 5.476/266.11, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.412/270.86, Was #10
Right Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.455/263.82, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.488/261.37, Was #13

Cowie goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a spot to 12th. St. Arnaud makes a clean, straight pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 7.164/131.54, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.400/255.05, Was #8
Right Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 6.431/130.94, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.485/255.92, Was #13

Mercier gets about 200 feet out and has to pedal. He regains traction for a moment, then gives up on the run a little past half track. Olivarez had a similar experience only he gets a little further down track before giving up on the run.

Left Lane: Ray Martin Runs 5.350/267.59, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.379/266.79, Was #7
Right Lane: Joey Severance Runs 10.677/92.89, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.403/266.48, Was #9

Severance gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Martin makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the fifth spot.

Left Lane: Mark Taliaferro Runs 8.002/72.98, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.368/268.54, Was #6
Right Lane: Greg Hunter Runs 11.948/53.20, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.373/268.17, Was #7

Hunter hits the throttle, gets about 200 feet out and bangs the blower. Taliaferro had problems just before half track and had to back off the throttle.

Left Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.398/263.82, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.325/266.32, Was #3
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.501/258.57, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.347/260.36, Was #4

A couple of clean, straight passes but neither driver improves.

Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.312/270.27, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.308/270.48, Was #2
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.321/269.08, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.298/270.59, Was #1

A good side-by-side to end the session, Whiteley and Demke were glued together all the way through the run but neither improve.
