ENNIS, Texas (Aug. 22, 2013) - Greg Anderson isn't exactly hard to read. If he's happy with how things are going on the track, it's pretty obvious; if he's not, well, it's not exactly difficult to figure out.
"I've never gone this long into a season without winning," said Anderson. "It's been the worst year I've ever had. It's frustrating, I can tell you that. And I can also tell you that we're working our butts off trying to figure out how to fix it and we've tried a lot of different things. We just haven't hit on the right thing yet."
"It's certainly not for lack of trying. We've done a lot of testing. We've worked a lot of long nights. We've tried new things; we've gone back to the way we've done things in the past. Trust me, we've thought of everything we could have thought of. but obviously, we haven't thought of the right thing yet."
If there's one thing that might bring a smile to Anderson's face, it's the thought of returning to Texas Motorplex for the 28th running of the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals and the second race in the Countdown to the Championship, Sept 19-22. Anderson definitely knows how to win at the Motorplex, garnering four of his 74 Pro Stock victories there.
"It's always been a pretty good track for me," he said. "Why, I'm not really sure. It's all concrete and I really like that about it. I also just go in there feeling like I can win every time I'm there. I sure hope that's the case this time. I can't tell you how I'd act if we ended up getting a Wally there."
While Anderson has seen some small improvements recently, he admits he and teammate Jason Line, who has one win this season, still haven't completely deciphered the new Camaro which Chevrolet debuted last season.
"To say we're surprised that we haven't figured out the new car is a big understatement," he said. "We've always been able to work hard and get the job done. But this time. I don't know. I just don't know. I do know that I can't even try to make excuses anymore and I also know that this isn't due to lack of effort on our part. Everybody on both teams has worked non-stop and we'll continue to do that."
Should Anderson, who is seventh in the Pro Stock point standings and has locked up a berth in the Countdown to the Championship, be able to pull off a win in Ennis, he would be tied with Warren Johnson for most Pro Stock wins (5) at the Motorplex. If that happens, Anderson won't be thinking a lot about the record.
"That would be nice, sure," he said. "But let's be honest; I need a win and the Motorplex would be a great place to get back on track. If we could win there, it would give us a huge shot in the arm and it would also tell us that we're doing something right.
"We're going to get this thing turned around. I know that; I have to believe that. We're not giving up - there's no giving up in any of us."
