Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 26th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.151/187.96, Now #18; No Prior Run

5:45 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 67 percent, barometer 30.07 inches, adjusted altitude 2,076 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Camarena did not get past the water on his first try. On this one, he made a good start, but ran out of steam on the top end. Something came off the bike on the top end - on the replay, it looked like a number plate off the wheelie bars.

Andrew Hines is on the bump spot at 7.050, by the way.

Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 6.938/194.16, Now #7; Best prior run: 10.306/79.73, Was #22
Right Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.115/189.60, Now #18; No Prior Run

Sullivan had handling problems on her first try, but this one was good enough to put her solidly in the middle of the field. Phillips made a full pass, but he's way off the race pace.

Now Adam Arana is on the bump spot at 7.001.

Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 40.218/110.32, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.654/136.18, Was #23
Right Lane: James Surber Runs 7.132/187.08, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.493/139.89, Was #22

DeSantis left before the tree was activated, did not get a time, and coasted through, the engine silent. Surber made a full pass, much better than his first, but he's also well off of the race pace.

Left Lane: David Barron Runs 7.159/183.54, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.285/179.83, Was #22

Barron made a smooth, straight run, a tenth better than his first, but not quick enough.

Left Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.051/188.41, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.121/187.60, Was #19
Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 6.952/191.27, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.061/187.86, Was #15

Smith improved nicely, but she isn't in the top twelve. Ellis made a strong run to bump into the field. Now Mike Berry is on the bump spot at 7.000.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.947/191.21, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.081/166.54, Was #17
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 6.994/191.97, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.053/191.05, Was #16

Krawiec made a big improvement from the first session, bumping into the field. Gann also improved a lot, but Krawiec's run reset the bump spot and Gann's run was no quick enough. Now John Hall is on the bump spot at 6.964.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.992/192.06, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.050/190.83, Was #16
Right Lane: Adam Arana Runs 6.919/194.24, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.001/189.52, Was #15

Hines improved, but not enough to make the provisional field. Arana also improved, by a bunch, and he bumped his way into the top part of the field.

Now Matt Smith is on the bump spot at 6.962.

Left Lane: Mike Berry Runs 6.976/191.10, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.000/191.13, Was #16
Right Lane: John Hall Runs 7.008/189.95, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.964/189.34, Was #13

Hall failed to improve. Berry improved, but not enough to make the field.

Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 6.934/193.71, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.955/193.24, Was #11
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.936/192.41, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.962/191.38, Was #12

The remaining riders are all in the field, so bumping is over for today.

Nice side-by-side runs, both racers improving enough to move up the ladder. Chip Ellis is now on the bump spot at 6.952.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.926/193.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.927/193.24, Was #5
Right Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 6.911/193.24, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.934/192.19, Was #8

Tonglet made a strong run to move up to the #2 spot, moving the rest of the top half down a spot.

Left Lane: Michael Ray Runs 10.597/73.22, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.913/193.60, Was #4
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 16.734/23.12, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.929/194.30, Was #7

Ray left hard, but slowed before half track. Johnson's bike gave off a puff of smoke and he may have used up an engine. He pulled to the side of the track as he coasted through.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 6.886/195.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.876/195.39, Was #1
Right Lane: Scotty Pollacheck Runs 7.222/189.55, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.911/191.65, Was #3

Pollacheck lost a lot of time before half track. Hector Jr. did not improve, but he's the only one in the eighties so far today.
