A FUEL Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in A FUEL at the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series 2013, 55th Annual March Meet listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Darrell Waters Runs 6.376/218.80, Now #1

1:24 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 2,283 feet. Lots of clouds, but almost no wind at all.

Nice clean pass for Waters to start the session.

Left Lane: Garry Wheeler Jr. Runs 6.703/214.69, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Wayne Runs 6.424/208.75, Now #2

They leave together and run on down the track, but Wayne's chutes don't deploy. It's a long track here and he goes on down into the "Finger" and gets the car stopped without incident.

Left Lane: Shawn Corbari Runs 6.468/212.66, Now #3
Right Lane: Dennis Allen Runs 7.107/202.64, Now #5

Allen's fueler is lazy off the line and can't run into the sixes.

Corbari matches the pace and takes the #3 spot for now.

Left Lane: Les Davenport Runs 6.591/212.49, Now #4
Right Lane: Jerry Kumre Jr Runs 6.717/202.45, Now #6

Jirka Kaplan is crew chief on Davenport's dragster.

They leave within 0.001 of each other, but Davenport just pulls steadily ahead going down the track.

Left Lane: No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Mike Burns No Time, Now #8

No tech card for the left lane. He sits a while in the lights and then has a soft leave. The car drifts steadily towards the center line, finally crossing, just missing the reflectors at mid-track.

Burns just sat in the lights at the green and was pushed away.

Left Lane: Kin Bates No Time, Now #10

Bates will get a single and he makes the most of it with a near picture perfect pass into what should have been the new top spot.

His 6.284 @ 224.25 pass is DQ'ed, due to this years strick oil down rules. The car started to spray near the 200 foot mark.

Kin Bates' incremental times: 60ft-1.084 sec., 330ft-2.763, 660ft-4.122/181.03 mph, 1,000ft-5.287.
