Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 12th annual Big O Tires NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 11.363/81.56, Now #21; Best prior run: 10.780/86.03, Was #20
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.617/139.52, Now #19; No Prior Run

5:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 27.85 inches, adjusted altitude 3,858 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

Haddock has traction problems early and backs off the throttle. Johnson has problems a little further down track and aborts the run.

Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 4.476/240.29, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.802/122.50, Was #20
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 9.371/48.98, Now #21; Best prior run: 12.876/67.23, Was #22

Diehl goes up in smoke quickly and backs off the throttle. Lesenko gets about 600 feet out and starts mixing up cylinders. The burst panel flies off and flames start coming from under the car. The flames get worse as he goes through the lights and continue to burn until he comes to a stop near the end of the track.

Left Lane: Josh Crawford No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.377/282.48, Was #18
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.284/238.93, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.164/296.76, Was #15

Crawford has problems after the burnout and has to shutdown. De Joria gets out of shape early, the rear of the car starts dancing around and she makes a move to the left. She gets about 500 feet out, the car continues to go to the left, then she backs off the throttle.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.108/310.27, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.289/303.98, Was #17
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 6.427/101.90, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.114/290.51, Was #11

Force goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and gets in the field on his last attempt. Capps gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke.

Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 4.125/301.40, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.190/300.60, Was #17
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.052/151.46, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.108/299.20, Was #11

Lee makes a clean, straight pass and gets in the show, bumping out De Joria. Wilkerson has traction problems early and has to give up on the run.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.158/287.05, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.136/305.15, Was #16
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.125/308.78, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.108/308.28, Was #10

Tasca gets a little out of the groove around half track but still makes a nice pass. He doesn't improve but is in on the bump. Head makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 10.582/68.44, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.136/308.99, Was #15
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.077/310.98, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.091/307.09, Was #6

Arend goes up in smoke almost as soon as he hits the throttle. Hagan started moving around about 500 feet out but hung on to make the second quickest run of the weekend and get in the second spot.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.074/317.27, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.121/311.70, Was #13
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.427/201.88, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.091/309.06, Was #6

Hight goes right down the groove with the quickest run of the round so far and a track record speed to move into the second spot. Beckman was out in front of Hight at the beginning of the run but lost traction about 600 feet out.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.159/292.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.099/305.70, Was #9
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.341/136.88, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.091/313.51, Was #6

Force gets about 300 feet out, strikes the tires and has to back off the throttle. Pedregon made a decent run but did not improve.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.191/301.40, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.098/308.78, Was #8
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.066/312.50, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.084/308.21, Was #4

Pedregon makes an impressive run here, the quickest of the round and the weekend, and he takes the top spot from Neff. Capps makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.170/281.07, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.089/313.22, Was #5
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.915/159.83, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.070/313.73, Was #2

Neff was on a decent pass but goes up in smoke about 400 feet out. Gray almost made it to the end of the track but the car nosed over just before he went through the lights.
