ENNIS, Texas -- After the opening rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Texas Motorplex, Brandon Lewis leads the Top Alcohol Dragster class and Steve Harker is No. 1 in Top Alcohol Funny Car. The three-day event, which kicked off today, is the second of six on the NHRA South Central division calendar.

Broken Arrow, Okla., racer Lewis made a 5.380-second, 261.37 mph pass to put him just ahead of second-place qualifier, Spencer Massey of Fort Worth, Texas. Massey ran 5.390 seconds at 268.81 mph. No. 3 qualifier Aaron Tatum, Oklahoma City, was just off the pace with a 5.391-second, 273.39 mph effort.

Harker, the division's reigning Top Alcohol Funny Car champ from Gainesville, Ga., put down a 5.620-second, 256.21 mph pass. Cleburne, Texas' Jimmy Jones is the No. 2 qualifier with a 5.631-second run at 258.32 mph. Harker's daughter Diana, also of Gainesville, Ga., is the No. 7 qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster.

Kevin Self, Caddo, Okla., set the pace in Comp Eliminator while Ron Taylor, Lincoln, Neb., wheeled his '57 Chevy to the top of the Super Stock qualifiers. In Stock Eliminator, Stuttgart, Ark., resident Dean Oliver took his '79 Malibu to the No. 1 qualifier spot and Mike Manners, Willis, Texas, leads the Top Sportsman field in his '58 Corvette. Joe Collier, Clyde, Texas, is the top qualifier in Top Dragster and Curtis Nichols III, Alvin, Texas, rode his Suzuki to the top of the Sportsman Motorcycle field.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Texas Motorplex. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Final qualifying and time trials will start Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will qualify at 10 a.m. and noon. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 1 and 4 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday morning at 9. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.
