Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 43nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 4.731/315.19, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.849/297.88, Was #21
Right Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.552/323.66, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.540/330.72, Was #5

12:58 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 32 percent, barometer 28.98 inches, adjusted altitude 2,607 feet, track temperature 106 degrees. Scotty Cannon is on the bump spot at 4.600.

Two clean passes until near the finish line where engine carnage starts. Erbacher improves, but not enough to qualify. Foley makes another good looking four fifty pass.

The clean up crew rolls the trucks and attack the Stuff on the track in the left lane at the finish line.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.599/312.50, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.544/323.04, Was #7
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 5.213/193.38, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.543/324.51, Was #6

1:07 p.m. ...and we are back. Schumacher has a hole out after the 330 and it costs him. Vandergriff chased him down the track until mid-course, where the pipes went wet.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.570/321.73, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.574/313.73, Was #12
Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.564/325.85, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.643/265.85, Was #18

This is a BIG TIME run for Fuller, as he doesn't want to go into the last session not qualified. Looks like the Canadian tune up is back! The CAT car thunders down the track and into the top half of the field. Grubnic is off the line first and led him to the finish line and moves two spots up the ladder. This would have made a great race tomorrow!

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.642/293.60, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.572/323.50, Was #11
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 5.910/151.41, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.521/328.22, Was #1

Todd strikes the tire near the 330 lights, after the best sixty foot time of the session [0.855] and won't improve. Dixon has a good pass going until the top end, where there is a lot of smoke from the engine.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 4.538/331.04, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.573/328.94, Was #12
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.064/209.01, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.600/317.64, Was #17

Cannon's engine starts dropping cylinders at mid-track and he won't improve. Will's team found some good power and it takes the car well into the current top half of the field with the best MPH of the weekend.

Looks like a little dusting and cleaning in Cannon's lane near the turn off.

Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 12.283/75.02, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.608/321.81, Was #18
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 4.899/296.37, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.019/287.11, Was #22

1:26 p.m. Chrisman runs his season best ET and MPH, but will not move up the ladder. Hartley's car strikes the tires at the hit.

Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 4.827/291.01, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.806/241.37, Was #21
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.714/326.16, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.764/320.66, Was #20

Strasburg's engine starts to drop cylinders and slows. Millican runs a big MPH, but doesn't improve enough to get into the tough show.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 8.679/104.69, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.576/325.45, Was #14
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.568/324.59, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.566/321.50, Was #10

Another good looking pass for Cory Mac. The pilot chute flies up and sticks in the wing strut at the finish line. He dumps the second chute and makes the turnout with out anymore drama. Lucas' tires started to spin and smoke right after the sixty foot lights.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 6.242/136.00, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.574/314.83, Was #13
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 4.657/316.15, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.589/323.27, Was #15

Herbert car strikes the tires at the 330 lights and he slows. Bradshaw gets to the finish line under power and will stay #15 for now.

Left Lane: David Baca Runs 4.557/327.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.523/329.18, Was #2
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.587/326.32, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.593/322.96, Was #16

These two have a great tune up for tomorrow! Kalitta gets off the bump and Baca cards a third mid-four fifty pass of the weekend!

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.553/321.35, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.525/309.27, Was #3
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.540/330.07, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.529/329.83, Was #4

Last pair of the session. Two more cars ready for tomorrow. Both cars run side by side from start to finish.

1:40 p.m. J.R. Todd stays #1 with a 4.521 and Alan Bradshaw is on the bump spot at 4.589. The best is likely yet to come, with the TF'ers running last tonight in the cooler evening hours.
