Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 43nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.808/205.44, Now #24; Best prior run: 14.026/62.24, Was #24
Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.737/205.19, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.761/203.58, Was #21

11:15 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 38 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 2,053 feet, track temperature 89 degrees with clear blue skies and a slight wind across the track.

Kenny Koretsky is on the bump spot at 6.722. According to several of the drivers, this is THE SESSION to set their best ET's.

Panella is still struggling on the low end end and won't improve. Watson continues to improve, but is still a little short on performance.

Left Lane: Tommy Brown Runs 6.704/207.21, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.761/205.38, Was #21
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.775/203.65, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.779/198.70, Was #22

Brown's car moves around a little early on, but he gets it right to move into the field for now. This isn't likely to last long.

V. Gaines is on the bump spot at 6.710.

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.679/206.86, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.737/205.13, Was #21
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.696/206.35, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.727/205.41, Was #18

Both cars have the power to get in this tough field and with two straight and true runs they move well up the qualifying ladder. Hammonds time may keep him in for this session.

. Tommy Brown is now on the bump spot at 6.704.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.655/208.49, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.695/207.24, Was #13
Right Lane: Craig Hankinson Runs 6.708/206.70, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.705/206.07, Was #17

Almost identical sixty foot times, but Johnson power takes over and pushes the GTO into the current top spot and fastest MPH. Hankinson slows a little from his prior best.

Left Lane: Todd Hoerner No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.804/204.57, Was #23
Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.685/207.69, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.699/206.73, Was #15

Hoerner is leaking Stuff on the starting line and he is shut off and pushed away. Humphreys' car gets the wheels up and then moves around at the hit. He still improves enough to likely keep him in the show for now.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.687/207.02, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.732/205.26, Was #20
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.689/207.05, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.694/206.89, Was #14

Good looking passes for both cars and they join the group moving up the ladder. Edwards shows the power and gets the #11 spot by 0.002 seconds.

Jim Yates is on the bump spot at 6.696.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.690/206.23, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.722/205.66, Was #20
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.667/207.69, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.692/206.73, Was #14

All six sixty field now. Johnson has the best sixty foot time of the session so far and parleys it into a current #3 position. Koretsky finds the tune up too and moves five spots up the ladder to the current #15 spot for now.

11:30 a.m.Things go bad on the top end for KJ, as the chutes don't completely deploy and blossom. He starts to porpoise the car, hard on the brakes, and drives way onto the beach. The front end plows a big furrow, slowing the car, until it finally stops near the catch net. The carbon fiber front end is torn up big time, but the car looks to be repairable to my untrained eye. Lots of dirt, but all of the big pieces are still attached.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.677/206.67, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.710/205.88, Was #20
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.688/207.21, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.682/206.80, Was #10

11:37 a.m. The call goes out to start them up! Max Naylor is on the bump spot at 6.692.

.Two good sixty foot times and Gaines moves from outside the field into the top half of the field for now. Morgan has a better MPH, but can't quite match his prior best ET.

Left Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.686/206.73, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.692/205.16, Was #17
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.915/205.01, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.679/206.57, Was #10

Kenny Koretsky is on the bump spot at 6.690 and Naylor picks up enough to get into the field for now. Krisher's car was off pace at the sixty foot lights and doen't improve.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.656/207.85, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.689/206.95, Was #16
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.654/208.75, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.673/207.02, Was #5

Jeg Coughlin is now on the bump spot at 6.689 and can't be bumped. It doesn't matter, as both cars thunder down the track and well into the top half of the field. Nice runs.

Greg Stanfield is on the bump spot at 6.689.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.669/206.86, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.678/207.27, Was #9
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.648/208.01, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.667/207.43, Was #6

The other two Countdown to One racers are taking no prisoners either and take over the new #1 and #7 spots in the field. The qualifying points are critical for Connolly to stay in the hunt.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.670/208.49, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.675/207.98, Was #8
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.666/206.99, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.665/206.76, Was #5

Stevens' car moves around at the hit and it slows him a little. Line gets a small ET improvement, but both cars will stay in their current qualify positions.

11:48 a.m. Connolly stays #1 at 6.648 and Greg Stanfield is on the bump spot at 6.689.
