CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:
Left Lane: Bryan Morrison Runs 8.190/163.81/-0.520, Now #2 F/AA Index: 8.71
Right Lane: Steve Kent Runs 8.948/150.87/-0.542, Now #1 G/SM Index: 9.49
12:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 60 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 28.83 inches, adjusted altitude 1,488 feet, track temperature 77 degrees.
Comp takes the stage for the first hit of the weekend. Good openers for the pair as both are more than .50 under.
Left Lane: Clarence Thomas Runs 18.267/54.01/10.537, Now #4 B/AA Index: 7.73
Right Lane: Wayne Ramay Runs 6.991/190.19/-0.529, Now #2 A/ND Index: 7.52
Thomas has some problems and is coasting early in the run. Ramay is almost .53 under and goes to an early #2.
Left Lane: Tom Brown Runs 8.596/154.72/-0.314, Now #5 F/ED Index: 8.91
Right Lane: Scott Hedlund Runs 8.223/164.89/-0.517, Now #4 B/SM Index: 8.74
Hedlund joins the pack of low .50 under cars that have run here in the first session but Brown is well off the pace in his F/ED. The weather seems to have lightened up some and we have lots of puffy clouds and even more sunshine. The bad news is there appears to be about a 20 mph side wind to contend with after the cars clear the grandstands.
Left Lane: Bob Marshall Runs 7.447/190.30/-0.283, Now #7 B/AA Index: 7.73
Right Lane: Randy Jones Runs 8.537/157.96/-0.563, Now #1 F/SM Index: 9.10
Marshall hugged the left hand wall all the way down. He will need to find some ponies before he makes this show. Jones goes all the way to the top of the heap.
Left Lane: Steve Holloway Runs 6.701/206.76/-0.629, Now #1 A/AA Index: 7.33
Right Lane: Al Bresch Runs 9.424/148.49/-0.066, Now #9 G/SM Index: 9.49
Holloway takes over the top spot in a big way. He drives the altered Pontiac to almost .63 under. Bresch will need help.
Left Lane: Bill Kent Runs 7.030/189.92/-0.540, Now #4 C/D Index: 7.57
Right Lane: Eric Grundhoefer Runs 9.697/151.19/1.077, Now #11 G/EA Index: 8.62
It almost sounded like Grundhoefer double stepped the car at the hit. He almost rolled to a stop before the throttle picked up again. Kent takes the C/D well into the field.
Left Lane: J.D. Zink Runs 7.051/185.43/-0.469, Now #8 A/ND Index: 7.52
Right Lane: Dean Howerton Runs 7.148/191.65/-0.422, Now #9 C/D Index: 7.57
Zink was another wall hugger as he rode it all the way to the stripe. Howerton gets on the board as well.
Left Lane: Joe Mozeris Runs 7.174/186.87/-0.876, Now #1 B/AA Index: 8.05
Right Lane: Bryan Fitzgerald Runs 7.895/170.92/-0.415, Now #11 E/AA Index: 8.31
Mozeris has a new car and the C/AA that came up on class is certainly incorrect. His car appears to be a new dragster of some sort.
Left Lane: Will Hatcher No Time, Now #18 A/ED Index: 7.20
Right Lane: Mike DePalma Runs 8.128/166.35/-0.562, Now #4 F/A Index: 8.69
Hatcher fell silent early and coasted to a stop just after the 1000ft mark. DePalma gets a good number to come up and is well into the show.
Left Lane: Dan Fletcher Runs 8.149/164.39/-0.601, Now #3 G/SMA Index: 8.75
Right Lane: John Edwards Runs 7.490/182.01/-0.560, Now #6 C/AA Index: 8.05
Fletcher is in Braun's car and it's a Pontiac, not a Cobolt. Edwards at .56 under.
Left Lane: Bub Miller Runs 8.552/155.69/-0.298, Now #16 I/AA Index: 8.85
Right Lane: David Cook Jr No Time, Now #22 A/D Index: 7.10
Cook was pushed away in the A/D but Miller does post some numbers.
Left Lane: David Beckley Runs 7.427/199.46/0.067, Now #20 A/AA Index: 7.36
Right Lane: Ed Sigmon Runs 8.818/155.51/-0.402, Now #15 C/SR Index: 9.22
It appeared that Cook left some 'stuff' in the lane after the burnout so the track crew went to work on the lane at after about 10 minutes they pronounced it all well again. Beckley used a lot of the left lane and was forced to pedal the Vette early in the run. .40 under for Sigmon.
Left Lane: Bill Morse Runs 16.013/51.30/6.523, Now #23 G/SM Index: 9.49
Right Lane: Bruno Massel Runs 7.551/182.92/-0.629, Now #3 DD/AT Index: 8.18
Morse shook hard and called it off. Massel with a nice pass. I hope the class is correct.
Left Lane: Joey Tanksley Runs 7.210/184.07/-0.460, Now #14 C/DA Index: 7.67
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 7.892/117.39/0.732, Now #23 A/A Index: 7.16
Deceglie was not under power after half track but Tanksley makes the show.
Left Lane: Dave Barcelon Runs 8.486/159.40/-0.564, Now #6 G/A Index: 9.05
Right Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 6.726/202.21/-0.634, Now #4 A/AA Index: 7.36
Ellis was straight as a string in the altered.
Left Lane: Frank Aragona Runs 8.453/145.91/-0.617, Now #6 G/EA Index: 9.07
Right Lane: Lou Ficco Jr. Runs 7.096/192.91/-0.634, Now #3 B/AA Index: 7.73
Nice side by side runs here.
Left Lane: Tom Mettler Runs 7.489/181.23/-0.581, Now #8 PST Index: 8.07
Right Lane: Scott Benham Runs 11.523/72.65/4.253, Now #30 B/SR Index: 7.27
Benham slows early. Mettler is well in the field.
Left Lane: Jeff Lane Runs 7.989/164.83/-0.601, Now #9 B/SR Index: 8.59
Right Lane: Thomas Schmidt Runs 8.553/157.52/-0.667, Now #2 C/SR Index: 9.22
Both under .60 under. That's the end of Comp qualifying here in session one. Pro Stock is scheduled next.
