POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.810/281.19, Now #1
3:14 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 1,342 feet, track temperature 85 degrees.
Ashley makes her first hit ever in a Nitro Funny, in competition. The car
nosed over on the top end and there was a huge cloud of smoke. Nothing on the track so next is Bernstein.
Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 12.935/60.80, Now #3
Right Lane: Grant Downing Runs 5.026/298.47, Now #2
Well, today is Ray Alley's birthday and I can imagine what he wants. Not going to happen here as the car shook hard and fell silent before 100 feet. Downing had holes out but still gets a full hit.
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.073/288.03, Now #4
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.018/265.22, Now #2
Both cars certainly not lean! Both cars had daylight header flames and a huge cloud of those orange/brown fumes. Both also seemed to have holes out.
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 11.549/89.64, Now #6
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.883/284.45, Now #2
It appears that Okahara tried to toast Beckman just a little bit. Just before the finish there was a flash and the car appeared to have a bit of fire going right up until the time the car stopped. We're down as the Safari is out cleaning his lane. Haddock struck the tires before 60 feet and then coasted on out.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.833/317.19, Now #3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.795/316.01, Now #1
After the cleanup we two nice runs from Wilkerson and Head. Heads goes to the #1 spot and pushes Force to #2.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #11
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 9.473/90.73, Now #8
Gilbertson struck the tires at the hit and he clicked it so quickly he rolled to a stop at half track. Kalitta did the same, but about 100ft further down track.
Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 6.412/139.78, Now #8
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 10.511/82.27, Now #10
Bartone wandered over the first half of the track and finally called it off when the car was ready to take aim on the half track cones. Ashley lost traction early and was coasting.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.830/320.74, Now #3
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.270/153.96, Now #9
Densham pushes Wilkerson down a spot and goes to #3. Worsham rattled the tires hard and he had the best seat in the house to watch Densham's run.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 9.247/86.26, Now #12
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.728/330.80, Now #1
Scelzi gives the rest of the field something to shoot at. Big speed as well. Gary Scelzi's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.303, 660ft-3.263/266.27mph, 1,000ft-4.053. Pedregon wasn't as lucky and he was smoking the tires very early.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.778/322.34, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon No Time, Now #20
TJ had to watch more than his own car on this run. Before half track Pedregon crossed over into the left lane and they were side by side until Pedregon took out the 1000ft marker before he was able to cross back into his own lane. His 5.022/226.540 will certainly be DQd.
Left Lane: Eric Medlen Runs 4.819/288.64, Now #6
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.741/327.82, Now #2
Medlen has his pony kind of nose over on the big end but Capps pretty much got all of this one. He can't quite catch Scelzi but he does put Schumacher Funny Cars #1 and #2 for the moment.
Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.693/326.79, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.085/122.96, Now #14
Not one mosquito lived after this pair fogged in the finish line in smoke. Force had to slap the pedal once before 60ft and then ease back into the throttle. That cost him some time and the engine problems set in much earlier for him. Hight had no problems, other than the smoke at the finish, and goes to the top of the field. We move on to the Top Fuel Dragsters.
