Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 5.831/230.06, Now #1
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 6.234/203.00, Now #2

12:59 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 1,342 feet, track temperature 77 degrees.

De Joria is a TAFC rookie, making her first official pass in competition. Kuhns sat out last year, so he gets to join her in the first pair of the year.

DeJoria's car shook and danced quite a bit on this run and appeared to be down on power on the top end. Kuhns made a clean pass, but that may not be quick enough to make the field here.

Left Lane: Rian Konno Runs 16.319/54.00, Now #3
Right Lane: Pete Swayne Runs 17.730/54.84, Now #4

Both cars ripped the rear tires loose immediately, shaking violently.

Left Lane: Dale Van Gundy Runs 12.702/85.95, Now #4
Right Lane: Jeff Carroll Runs 6.257/233.28, Now #3

Van Gundy lost traction violently and coasted through. Carroll shook, pedaled, and continued.

Left Lane: Paul Crifasi Runs 5.950/242.41, Now #3
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.782/246.66, Now #1

Two clean runs. Crifasi left a lot on the table early in the run, Harrington carded a 0.974 60-foot time.

Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.788/242.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.770/250.46, Now #1

Two more good runs - looks like the track is okay with the right clutch tuneup.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.029/243.85, Now #6
Right Lane: Larry Miner Runs 6.415/237.71, Now #9

Bellemour's car shook hard on the launch and he had to pedal it. Miner made a strong launch, but fell off the pace before half track.

Left Lane: Ken Kraus Runs 5.700/253.42, Now #1
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 5.787/239.27, Now #4

Both cars chattered the tires on the launch, with a 1.008 60-foot time for Kraus and a 1.001 for Patton, but both drove through it nicely and Kraus moved to #1.

Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 9.873/119.32, Now #13
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.682/255.58, Now #1

August's car shook and headed for the centerline, forcing him to lift. Taylor posted the quickest 60-foot time so far, a 0.966, and used to to move toi the head of the class.

Left Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 6.022/248.29, Now #10
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.623/257.14, Now #1

Coolidge shook and pedaled, it didn't appear that Tasca had any problems at all.

Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.661/250.92, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.891/240.12, Now #10

"The Woz" mad a nice run, Gasparrelli shook and pedaled on the launch.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson No Time, Now #22
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.764/250.18, Now #5

Thompson got off the line a little smoother, but his car was loose on the top end and he took out the finish line reflectors. Fortunately for Hough, he left first and ran quicker, so his time stands.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 15.227/54.45, Now #21
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.507/263.46, Now #1

Gordon shook hard and had a good seat to watch as Manzo made the fastest run ever for a TAFC. Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.471, 660ft-3.649/210.67mph, 1,000ft-4.654.

Left Lane: Jay Payne No Time, Now #25

payne wasted a 5.562 at 249.21 mph, taking out the finish line reflectors. Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.960 sec., 330ft-2.477, 660ft-3.669/208.04mph, 1,000ft-4.687. The run doesn't count, so he'll have to do it all over again tomorrow.
