BRAINERD, Minn. -- Qualifying is complete at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Brainerd Int'l Raceway (BIR) and Aaron Olivarez sped into the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Alcohol Dragster and Vern Moats held on to the top spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car. The event kicked off Friday and will conclude with eliminations on Sunday.

In his first run of the weekend, Olivarez, a Sandy, Utah, resident, rocketed down the quarter-mile with a 5.441-second pass at 264.55 mph to catapult him ahead of Friday's best qualifier, Jeff Hamelink of Savage, Minn. Richard Putz, Earlville, Iowa, clocked in in the No. 2 spot with his 5.487-second, 256.80 mph effort while Hamelink failed to improve on his initial qualifying run of 5.513 seconds at 257.87 mph. He finished as the No. 3 qualifier.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, veteran racers Moats and Roger Bateman were virtually tied for the top spot but Moats' 5.674-second run at 255.63 mph tripped the clocks just a hairsbreadth before Bateman. For Bateman, of Calgary, Alb., the 5.674-second, 251.91 mph pass was a career-best.

In Comp Eliminator, Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., held on to his No. 1 qualifying position as did Jeff Lanoue, Zimmerman, Minn., in Sportsman Motorcycle. Super Stock competitor Michael Mans, Rogers, Minn., moved up from No. 2 to No. 1, and in Stock Eliminator, Lawrence Line, Wright, Minn., jumped from the No. 3 spot to No. 1. Dean Dubbin, Royalton, Minn., finished as the No. 1 qualifier in Top Comp.

Racing continues Sunday at BIR. Gates open at 7 a.m. and eliminations start at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20. Children 6 to 12 years old are half-price and kids 5 and under are admitted free. For more information call BIR, (866) 444-4455.
