POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Ray Stutz Runs 17.665/40.37, Now #23; Best prior run: 25.859/22.53, Was #23

12:17 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.34 inches, adjusted altitude 1,903 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Stutz hits the throttle and pops the burst panel.

Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.576/325.45, Now #8; Best prior run: 10.176/74.72, Was #22
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.466/324.83, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.504/328.78, Was #3

An impressive run here, Schumacher makes the quickest pass of the weekend in less than ideal conditions. Kalitta makes his first good run of the weekend and gets in the eighth spot for now.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.508/307.58, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.534/326.63, Was #4
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 10.125/106.71, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.989/206.95, Was #20

Beckman hits the throttle and goes up in smoke, leaving him just one more chance to get in the show. Troxel makes another nice run, her quickest of the weekend, and she stays in the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.588/317.57, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.549/324.20, Was #6
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 11.735/77.18, Now #22; Best prior run: 9.266/86.66, Was #22

Chrisman hits the throttle, gets about 50 feet out, then goes up in smoke. Dixon makes a decent pass, right down the groove, but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.503/323.74, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.597/283.49, Was #10
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 7.268/115.92, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.573/324.75, Was #7

Kalitta ges about 300 feet out and strikes the tires. Lucas makes a good run, the incrementals almost mirroring those of Troxel's run, and he moves up to the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Robert Reehl Runs 4.881/303.71, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.865/297.02, Was #18
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.534/324.20, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.601/323.81, Was #11

McClenethan makes a clean pass, just a little movement near the end of the run, and he moves into the top half of the field. Rheel was moving around near the end of his run, then the engine blows just as he goes through the lights.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.543/327.51, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.428/121.63, Was #21
Right Lane: David Baca Runs 4.485/324.28, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.914/252.66, Was #19

Baca makes a flawless pass here, his quickest ever, and moves into the second spot. Grubnic makes his first clean run and he gets in the field in the ninth spot for now.

Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 9.936/89.22, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.673/298.01, Was #17
Right Lane: Joe Hartley No Time, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.856/271.73, Was #19

Hartley car fired, didn't sound exactly right, and they shut him off. Strasburg shook the tires hard off the line and clicked it off.

Left Lane: John Smith Runs 4.896/229.27, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.621/321.81, Was #15
Right Lane: Scott Weis Runs 4.803/248.84, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.748/281.30, Was #18

Both drivers were on decent passes, over 260 MPH at half-track, then it looked like both lost the blower belt, first Smith, then Weis.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.721/308.78, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.607/315.64, Was #14
Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 11.058/81.80, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.673/315.05, Was #16

Lagana gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke. Foley makes a clean pass but no improvement.

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.575/324.36, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.501/316.08, Was #4
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 7.700/101.41, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.537/321.19, Was #8

Herbert gets about 400 feet out and strikes the tires. Fuller makes another good run and stays in the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.585/322.73, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.578/319.90, Was #13
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 9.272/84.79, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.491/325.45, Was #3

Millican makes a straight, clean run, but slows from his attempt yesterday. Bernstein has traction problems and clicks it off.
