POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 41st annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.756/231.68, Now #5; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bil Gallio Runs 6.203/235.23, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.586/232.59, Was #19

11:50 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 31 percent, barometer 29.42 inches, adjusted altitude 1,234 feet, track temperature 90 degrees.

Hudson made his first pass of the weekend a good one. Gallio picked up a bunch, still came up short. Mark Woznichak is on the bump spot at 6.191.

ake took out the timing reflector on his first attempt. This one turned out better, but he still battled tire shake. Gallio moved into the fives and away from the bump spot.

Left Lane: Mike Bell No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.996/240.42, Was #15
Right Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.707/252.99, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.880/247.07, Was #11

Bell broke on the burnout, leaving a small trail of oil on the launch pad.

Left Lane: John Patton Runs 7.240/131.81, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.839/249.03, Was #10
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 6.101/187.36, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.733/254.62, Was #5

Patton's engine went silent about 300 feet out. Hough had problems on the top end after running 194 mph at half track and it sounded like the throttle was hung open in the shutdown area, but he got it stopped okay.

Left Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 9.797/111.24, Now #23; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.894/246.71, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.191/243.33, Was #16

Lewis' car shook and skated toward the centerline, then he lifted. Nice run by "The Woz" to get off the bump spot.

Left Lane: Tate Branch Runs 5.927/248.16, Now #15; Best prior run: 16.174/58.73, Was #28
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.650/252.28, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.655/252.57, Was #1

Branch's car also skated toward the centerline, but he was able to pedal and save it. Meanwhile, Taylor improved his grip on the top spot on a nice-looking run.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.638/256.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.706/255.24, Was #2
Right Lane: John Weaver Runs 5.693/250.09, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.852/163.95, Was #23

Two very nice runs, Payne taking the top spot away from Taylor. Weaver shook violently yesterday, but the car appeared to be smooth all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Tim Nemeth Runs 5.897/208.81, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.839/244.96, Was #12
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 9.376/92.93, Now #24; Best prior run: 15.731/54.03, Was #28

Gordon's car shook and made a violent move out toward the wall, forcing him to lift. Nemeth was a bit slower than yesterday on an otherwise clean run.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.785/236.30, Now #10; Best prior run: 22.861/35.69, Was #29
Right Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 5.862/243.41, Now #14; Best prior run: 10.220/77.23, Was #26

Both runs looked good, but Williamson's car was moving around a bit more than Thompson's.

Left Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 5.631/257.53, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.806/249.67, Was #11
Right Lane: Paul Crifasi Runs 6.205/227.57, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.275/229.98, Was #23

"The Northwest Hitter" shows where that nickname came from with a stout run, right down the groove. Bucky Austin's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.529, 660ft-3.734/206.32mph, 1,000ft-4.761.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 6.034/251.34, Now #22; Best prior run: 13.377/68.38, Was #29
Right Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.779/253.95, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.439/161.71, Was #25

Bellemeur got his problems sorted out today, but could not make the bump time. August did likewise and was plenty quick enough to shake the field up again. Now Vern Moats is on the bump spot at 5.891.

Left Lane: Larry Miner Runs 5.634/255.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.768/252.28, Was #9
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 10.801/79.11, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.708/257.24, Was #6

Gasparrelli shook and slowed after 200 feet. Miner also shook a bit, but drove through it and into the second spot on the ladder.

Left Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 6.083/235.60, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.213/198.03, Was #25
Right Lane: Ron Morrison Runs 6.171/199.05, Now #24; Best prior run: 12.929/62.89, Was #29

Harrington had at least one dead cylinder, spitting raw fuel from the right header. But he improved over his first effort. Morrison's car left some debris in the lane, so the sweeper truck made a couple laps.

Left Lane: Rian Konno No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.913/219.29, Was #18
Right Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.660/256.50, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.891/253.56, Was #16

Konno's car shook and coasted to a stop about 150 feet out on the burnout. Moats was bumped earlier this round, made up for it very nicely on a solo pass. Now Bret Williamson is on the bump spot at 5.862.

Right Lane: David Ray Runs 5.667/257.09, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.781/251.77, Was #12

Last car. Nice run, right down the groove and into the top half of the field.
