Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #4
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Trumble Jr Runs 6.881/201.58, Now #28; Best prior run: 6.862/201.19, Was #27
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.809/203.43, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.876/202.61, Was #28

11:25 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.78 inches, adjusted altitude 1,442 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Jim Yates is on the bump spot at 6.758 and conditions are pretty good for this round, so we could see more bumping in this session.

Krisher has the power, but has been having problems getting the power to the ground. He may have softened it up too much this time around, a 1.030 60-foot time much slower than the qualified cars have been running. He got it down the track, but came up way short.

Left Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.791/203.43, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.778/202.94, Was #21
Right Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 6.799/202.76, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.829/201.97, Was #26

Koretsky has also been having problems getting the power to the ground, sorting out a brand new car. He had a 0.995 60-foot time but the car did not respond well after that.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.737/204.70, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.739/204.54, Was #6
Right Lane: Larry Peternel Runs 7.247/164.21, Now #33; Best prior run: 7.119/188.89, Was #33

The order this round is based on the runs last round, reversed. Smith had problems last night, so he runs early in this round, but is already safely in the field. He improved slightly here, moving up one spot on the ladder.

Left Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 7.232/188.83, Now #34; Best prior run: 7.126/193.24, Was #34
Right Lane: Jerry Hemmingson Runs 6.987/199.08, Now #32; Best prior run: 6.939/198.99, Was #32

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.802/202.03, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.815/202.21, Was #26
Right Lane: John Mahoney Runs 6.897/199.70, Now #29; Best prior run: 6.920/199.17, Was #30

Watson's car leaves hard, his 60-foot times right with "the big dogs" with a 0.991, but his car doesn't have the top-end muscle yet.

Left Lane: Tony Rizzo Runs 6.925/201.88, Now #31; Best prior run: 6.922/201.01, Was #31
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 14.622/52.95, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.838/201.13, Was #27

grant shook and slowed immediately.

Left Lane: Pat Herold Runs 6.896/199.73, Now #29; Best prior run: 6.916/199.26, Was #30
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.755/204.32, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.755/203.98, Was #14

Pawuk picked it back up this round, matching his out-of-the-box run Friday. and improbving his speed.

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.787/203.40, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.808/203.16, Was #25
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.757/203.74, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.767/203.19, Was #19

Allen bumped into the field on a nice run. Now Erica Enders is on the bump spot at 6.758.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.756/204.23, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.752/203.71, Was #13
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.771/204.23, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.770/203.86, Was #20

No help here, both drivers a few thousandths off their best run.

Left Lane: Bob Panella Runs 6.764/203.55, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.785/203.06, Was #22
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.705/127.88, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.759/203.95, Was #18

These two were threats to bump into the field. Panella had a strong launch, a 0.991 60-foot time, but came up short on the big end of the track. Edwards was off-pace from the start with a 1.011 short time.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.769/202.58, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.762/203.06, Was #19
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.773/203.80, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.758/204.14, Was #16

Enders started with an off-pace 1.001 60-foot time and did not improve, but Northrop could not turn his super-quick 0.982 60-foot time into a qualifying ET.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.763/204.11, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.758/204.11, Was #17
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.757/203.40, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.748/203.46, Was #11

Realistically, this was Yates' last shot at bumping into the field because it will be warmer and the track will be hotter this afternoon. He had a solid 0.990 60-foot time (AJ had a 0.991) but came up short and Enders is safe until this afternoon.

Left Lane: Dave Howard Runs 6.786/203.65, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.751/203.86, Was #12
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.754/204.08, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.748/203.83, Was #10

Howard's car lost a lot of time on the launch. Stevens slowed a bit from his best, but it was a good run.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.742/204.70, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.737/203.92, Was #6
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.751/203.92, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.746/203.40, Was #9

Two nice runs, 0.996 and 0.995 short times. No improvement, but very close to their best runs.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.735/204.51, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.744/203.95, Was #8
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.727/205.66, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.744/205.47, Was #7

WJ spun the tires hard, posting a 1.002 60-foot time, then blasted to the #2 spot and set a track speed record in the process. By contrast, Stanfield had a 0.986 and he also improved his position.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.748/205.32, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.728/205.35, Was #3
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.737/204.48, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.736/204.20, Was #5

KJ had the same problem with a 1.013 short time to Morgan's 0.990.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.730/204.94, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.736/203.89, Was #6
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.698/205.72, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.689/205.51, Was #1

0.991 60-foot time for Line, 0.985 for Anderson. Anderson once again is quick for the round, WJ second at 6.727, and Anderson took the track speed record back to boot!

With one session left, in the heat of the afternoon today, Anderson is #1 at 6.689 and Erica Enders is on the bump spot at 6.758.
