Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Darryl Jackman

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Second annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Craig Smith Runs 5.069/222.25, Now #23; Best prior run: 4.948/287.84, Was #23
Right Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 5.041/242.45, Now #25; Best prior run: 5.429/222.80, Was #26

We begin the final session of Top Fuel with Larry Dixon at the head of the class and Jim Cavalieri on the bump. Both drivers are not qualified and this is the final shot. They will remain unqualified as both make clean runs just a bit slower than the bump.

Left Lane: Robert Hallock Runs 9.155/81.24, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.858/291.19, Was #21
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 5.116/259.96, Now #26; Best prior run: 5.347/269.46, Was #26

Hallock has problems at about 200 feet and the flames go out completely. Chrisman makes his best run of the weekend but still falls short. Good start for the Chrisman family team.

Left Lane: David Baca Runs 4.895/221.56, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.733/315.05, Was #18

Baca is also having his first outing as a Top Fuel pilot. The Henkelman/Baca team has almost a full season under their belt and they are very close with Baca's racer. This time he blows up the engine big time. Blower flopping around on the manifold and lots of fire and smoke. This all happened just after half track with no warning at all. This was a tough place to debut a new team.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.386/184.88, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.732/291.26, Was #17

Head made his first pass of the weekend count and has not gotten down the track since. He's in the 17th spot and needs to run quicker than 4.730. Won't happen this weekend. Around half track the car began to spin the tires and head was forced to shut the car off.

Left Lane: Jim Cavalieri Runs 4.738/296.89, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.730/315.93, Was #16

Cavalieri will attempt to get off the bump as Garth Widdison is in the next pair and can bump Cavalieri. Almost. Almost. Cavalieri runs 4.738 against his own 4.730. He'll have to wait and see what happens with Widdison.

Left Lane: Rhonda Hartman-Smith Runs 4.652/314.02, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.718/313.07, Was #15
Right Lane: Garth Widdison Runs 5.184/209.14, Now #24; Best prior run: 5.000/279.15, Was #24

Big move for Rhonda. They've left a lot on the table this weekend and would like to get away from that #15 position. Boy, they did that. They are now #8 and would face Doug Kalitta in the first round. I think that the order could shuffle some before we're done so don't count on that one. Widdison tried hard but started spinning the tires before half track. He stayed with the run but can't muster the ET. We're down for a cleaning of the right lane.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.277/134.85, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.710/298.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 9.459/88.39, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.899/308.78, Was #22

Troxel is in the show deep enough that she most likely won't get bumped. Hartley has made one good run this weekend and needs about tenth and a half. Both drivers have aborted attempts. Troxel had a .864 60 foot number but the car wasn't right so she shut if off. Hartley was never in the run and he clicks it with smoke trailing from the pipes.

Left Lane: Shirley Muldowney Runs 4.731/302.48, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.688/301.54, Was #13
Right Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 4.719/306.81, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.839/298.21, Was #20

Strasburg does it. He bumps Cavalieri from the field and he was the last car that could do it. Great for he and his team but tough for Cavalieri's. Muldowney was right with Strasburg until some engine pieces started to fail. You could see her header flame change color and the car just stopped accelerating. She is still in the show in the #13 position.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.640/318.02, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.678/314.83, Was #12
Right Lane: Scott Weis Runs 10.671/67.30, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.716/307.79, Was #15

Another 4.6 pass for Grubnic and Bill Miller's racer is now #8. Weis strikes the tires and calls it off.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.575/324.67, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.656/320.43, Was #10
Right Lane: John Smith Runs 10.261/87.04, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.671/298.01, Was #11

Smith was out first but tire shake ends his attempt. Big numbers for Doug Kalitta. He moves from the bottom half all the way to #3. Kalitta came close to top speed but that stays with Kenny Bernstein at 325.14.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.643/312.57, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.602/312.35, Was #7
Right Lane: Darrell Russell Runs 13.779/80.25, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.628/315.71, Was #8

Russell didn't move ten feet before the tires were smoking. He called it off and remains #8. Cory Mac has been a bracket racer all weekend. All four runs are between 4.60 and 4.65. He remains in the top half and will have lane choice in round one.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.537/301.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.573/322.34, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 10.516/60.25, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.589/323.27, Was #5

Uh oh! Dougzilla just destroyed Las Vegas! He blew it up in the at about 1200 feet but still runs low ET of the weekend. He said they weren't here to play this weekend and it appears he meant it. Schumacher struck the tires before 60 feet and was never in this one. We have one more pair to dislodge Herbert from the second top qualifier spot of his career. Of course it's the beer wagons.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 9.292/88.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.569/323.81, Was #2
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.627/316.30, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.577/321.50, Was #4

Dixon strikes the tires early in the run and will settle for the #2 spot. Bernstein was right down the middle of the lane but he can only muster a 4.62. Doug Herbert holds on to his second ever top qualifier.
