Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

INDIANAPOLIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, 72nd annual Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.764/253.95, Now #1

1:57 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 94 degrees, relative humidity 50 percent, barometer 29.94 inches, adjusted altitude 4,091 feet.

Bogolo goes down the groove with a conservative run to start the session.

Left Lane: Stan Sipos Runs 6.958/164.65, Now #2
Right Lane: Kyle Smith Runs 10.566/99.70, Now #3

Sipos spun the slicks at the hit, pedaled once and got traction, then the engine started smoking about 800 feet out.

Smith struck the tires at the hit and backed off of the throttle.

Weather conditions: air temperature 94 degrees, relative humidity 50 percent, barometer 29.94 inches, adjusted altitude 4,091 feet, track temperature 125 degrees.

Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.754/246.26, Now #1
Right Lane: Mark Billington Runs 9.508/94.12, Now #4

Mullins goes down the groove with a clean, straight pass and he takes the early pole. billington lost traction at the hit, pedaled a couple of times, then gave up on the run.

Left Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 17.686/46.08, Now #7
Right Lane: Christine Foster Runs 5.622/256.21, Now #1

Whitely lost traction at the hit, pedaled, then backed off of the throttle. Foster goes down the groove with a good run and moves into the top spot for now.

Christine Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.533, 660ft-3.728/207.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.751.

Left Lane: Mick Steele Runs 7.017/139.11, Now #6
Right Lane: Phil Esz Runs 6.910/188.91, Now #4

Steele rattled the tires at the hit, pedaled, stayed on the throttle for about 600 feet and gave up on the run. Esz shook the tires and backed off of the throttle. he gets about 200 feet out, gets back on the throttle and goes through the rest of the run cleanly.

Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.634/259.41, Now #2
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 10.240/82.68, Now #9

Foster goes down the groove with a clean, straight pass to get in the second spot for now.

Chris Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.536, 660ft-3.740/206.39 mph, 1,000ft-4.767.

Whiteley shook the tires at the hit, made a move toward the wall, then backed off of the throttle.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.565/262.39, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob McCosh Runs 8.039/136.66, Now #9

Westerfield goes down the groove with quickest pass of the round so far to move into the top spot for now.

Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.505, 660ft-3.695/208.01 mph, 1,000ft-4.708.

McCosh had traction problems and was off of the throttle early.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 14.138/63.59, Now #14
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 8.517/105.93, Now #10

Gordon has traction problems at the hit and gives up on the run early. Bellemeur had problems about 300 feet out.
