Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ryan Oehler Runs 6.907/196.85, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.937/196.64, Was #11
Right Lane: Andie Rawlings No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 9.463/93.70, Was #18

12:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 28.81 inches, adjusted altitude 3,259 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Matt Smith is number one at 6.815 and Freddie Camarena is on the bump spot at 7.061.

Rawlings' problems continue as the bike spins the tire early and then starts to drift steadily towards the finish line, down track. It nails the finish line reflector and will DQ her run. This is her third infraction and it will cost her 15 points.

Oehler was long gone and improves on his ET and speed to move up a spot to #10.

Ryan Oehler's incremental times: 60ft-1.086 sec., 330ft-2.897, 660ft-4.428/159.80 mph, 1,000ft-5.766.

Left Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 6.963/192.52, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.882/194.02, Was #7
Right Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 6.988/193.63, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.061/189.76, Was #16

Sampey's bike has a good leave and then starts to drift towards the center line going down the track. She rides the stripe and it may have cost her some ET.

Great pass for Camarena to move four spots up the ladder to #12.

Angelle Sampey's incremental times: 60ft-1.065 sec., 330ft-2.889, 660ft-4.438/157.78 mph, 1,000ft-5.798.
Freddie Camarena's incremental times: 60ft-1.088 sec., 330ft-2.921, 660ft-4.474/157.78 mph, 1,000ft-5.830.

Right Lane: Jianna Salinas Runs 7.044/187.76, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.842/125.79, Was #17

Katie Sullivan is on the bump spot at 7.043.

Best run of the weekend by a bunch, but not quite good enough by 0.001 to dump in.

Jianna Salinas' incremental times: 60ft-1.074 sec., 330ft-2.890, 660ft-4.466/154.07 mph, 1,000ft-5.852.

Left Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.055/189.76, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.043/189.28, Was #16
Right Lane: Angie Smith Runs 6.978/194.60, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.010/194.13, Was #13

Smith's bike has a little spin off the line and she still power to the finish line and picks up a spot on the ladder.

No joy for Sullivan, as the team struggles with the tune up.

Left Lane: Michael Ray Runs 7.034/189.92, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.023/191.02, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.861/194.69, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.897/193.74, Was #9

Johnson finds some more tune up and makes another strong pass. That moves him up into the top half of the field in #5.

Ray makes a clean pass, but slows from his prior best.

Michael Ray's incremental times: 60ft-1.074 sec., 330ft-2.921, 660ft-4.486/156.61 mph, 1,000ft-5.856.
Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.058 sec., 330ft-2.859, 660ft-4.384/160.67 mph, 1,000ft-5.715.

Left Lane: Kelly Clontz Runs 7.045/191.51, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.010/191.78, Was #14
Right Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.960/194.74, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.913/196.47, Was #11

Clontz bike gets unhappy on the two step and she sits in the lights while Arana makes his pass. With a sixteen second RT she stays staged and makes her run. Her best, so far, to stay #14.

No drama for Arana, but he doesn't improve.

Kelly Clontz's incremental times: 60ft-1.107 sec., 330ft-2.957, 660ft-4.517/157.15 mph, 1,000ft-5.878.
Hector Arana's incremental times: 60ft-1.075 sec., 330ft-2.910, 660ft-4.458/158.24 mph, 1,000ft-5.809.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.871/196.27, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.894/195.22, Was #9
Right Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 6.956/195.62, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.867/196.36, Was #6

A better run for Krawiec on a new motor to move him up into the top half of the field in #7.

Clean pass for Arana, but no improvements.

Eddie Krawiec's incremental times: 60ft-1.076 sec., 330ft-2.873, 660ft-4.399/160.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.730.
Hector Arana Jr's incremental times: 60ft-1.100 sec., 330ft-2.934, 660ft-4.470/159.48 mph, 1,000ft-5.811.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.850/195.31, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.845/196.22, Was #4
Right Lane: Jerry Savoie Runs 6.869/194.63, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.837/193.35, Was #3

Two stright and strong passes, but neither rider will improve.

Andrew Hines' incremental times: 60ft-1.058 sec., 330ft-2.852, 660ft-4.373/161.00 mph, 1,000ft-5.705.
Jerry Savoie's incremental times: 60ft-1.049 sec., 330ft-2.844, 660ft-4.375/159.57 mph, 1,000ft-5.718.

Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 6.883/194.77, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.834/195.00, Was #2
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.845/197.28, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.815/197.33, Was #1

Strong leave and a strong finish for Smith to run the quickest time of the round.

No problems, but no improvements for Stoffer.

Karen Stoffer's incremental times: 60ft-1.076 sec., 330ft-2.877, 660ft-4.401/160.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.735.
Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.051 sec., 330ft-2.857, 660ft-4.385/161.00 mph, 1,000ft-5.710.

1:05 p.m. Katie Sullivan is on the bump spot at 7.043.
