Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Hale No Time, Now #18; No Prior Run

3:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 28.86 inches, adjusted altitude 2,720 feet, track temperature 90 degrees.

Matt Hagan is number one at 3.900 and Jim Campbell is on the bump spot at 8.051.

Ouch! Hale starts the burn out and the NHRA "Safety System" shuts off the engine and deploys the chute about 100 feet out. The crew gathers everything up and pushes the Impala away. He will get two more chances again tomorrow.

Left Lane: Jim Campbell Runs 8.258/79.01, Now #17; Best prior run: 8.051/83.37, Was #16
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 6.085/111.87, Now #11; No Prior Run

Both cars lose a cylinder or two early and that pushes the cars around off the line. Campbell dumps early and Haddock pushes it further to get into the field for now.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.099/278.69, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.358/92.44, Was #16
Right Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 7.377/81.26, Now #17; Best prior run: 8.518/75.09, Was #18

Jeff Arend, in Peter Russo's Monte Carlo, is now on the bump spot at 7.358. He has a better tune up this time and powers down the track to move all the way up to the current #4 spot.

Lindberg was away first, but, once again, has the tires shake loose before the 330 lights. He actually moves up a spot to #17.

Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.898 sec., 330ft-2.323, 660ft-3.287/267.96 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.893/330.80, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.277/107.32, Was #15
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 3.876/327.43, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.997/109.79, Was #16

Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 6.997, but doesn't stay there for long. He powers the Mustang off the line and flies on down the track to take over the new top spot. Nice clean pass.

Langdon got the starting line advantage and runs right with Wilkerson with better speed to move up to #2.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.869 sec., 330ft-2.234, 660ft-3.154/282.95 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.863 sec., 330ft-2.238, 660ft-3.140/285.71 mph.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 3.967/320.28, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.206/110.26, Was #16
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 3.945/319.82, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.922/158.80, Was #12

Like the last two pair, Cruz Pedregon is now on the bump spot at 6.206. He makes a strong pass to the finish line and moves up ten places to #6.

Johnson was second off the line and had all of the numbers going down the track to move up eight places to #4. The Charger was moving steadily towards the center line and just missed nailing the 1000 foot reflectors. He looked like he might have put the slicks on the stripes after that.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.884 sec., 330ft-2.266, 660ft-3.208/275.28 mph.
Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.258, 660ft-3.189/276.69 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.551/91.84, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.117/109.91, Was #16
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 7.523/83.76, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.491/185.64, Was #12

Too much power for the track conditions!

They both leave hard and then start to spin the tires about 100 feet out.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 7.380/85.00, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.020/112.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.466/108.97, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.229/219.76, Was #11

Another pair fire and fall back!

They leave close together and have similar numbers until after the 60 foot lights. Todd's Camry gets loose first and he is quickly off the throttle. Capps' Charger was next and really buzzed up the engine before he got off the pedal.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.354/306.05, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.879/158.59, Was #13
Right Lane: John Force Runs 6.264/108.01, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.185/292.65, Was #10

John Force Racing comes to the line! They are two of the top four in the points right now!

Another pair of broken runs. Force gets loose first, pedals, and then has to give it up.

Hight had a little more momentum before starting to shake the slicks. He is able to do a quick pedal slap and finish the pass under power. It's good enough for a one spot improvement to #12.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.868 sec., 330ft-2.482, 660ft-3.544/252.05 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 3.872/333.58, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.900/331.36, Was #3
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 7.928/83.59, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.949/326.16, Was #5

Don Schumacher Racing comes to the line to wrap up today's FC qualifying! They are the other two of the top four in the points right now!

They leave just 0.005 apart at the green, but Beckman's Charger shakes the tires loose after the 60 foot lights and he slows.

Hagan powers right on down the track and takes the top spot again with the best ET and speed of the session!

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.229, 660ft-3.141/285.47 mph.

3:51 p.m. Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 6.117.
