Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.061/189.76, Now #1
Right Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 8.788/103.89, Now #2

11:54 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 59 percent, barometer 28.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,410 feet, track temperature 96 degrees.

Top four ET's get bonus points this weekend. Eighteen bikes are entered, so we should have a bump spot this session.

Sullivan looked to be on a clean pass, but is coasting right before mid track.

Nice pass for Camarena to start the day.

Freddie Camarena's incremental times: 60ft-1.095 sec., 330ft-2.934, 660ft-4.505/155.60 mph, 1,000ft-5.881.

Left Lane: Andie Rawlings Runs 9.463/93.70, Now #4
Right Lane: Michael Ray Runs 7.056/190.86, Now #1

Odd? Ray was late getting the bike into the water and was still putting on his gloves when the call came to start the engines.

Rawlings is off the throttle early this time or no apparent reason. Again, right before the 660 lights.

Ray is clean to the finish line.

Michael Ray's incremental times: 60ft-1.072 sec., 330ft-2.938, 660ft-4.507/156.44 mph, 1,000ft-5.881.

Left Lane: Jianna Salinas Runs 9.251/92.90, Now #4
Right Lane: Kelly Clontz Runs 10.285/82.31, Now #6

Lot of excitement for both riders!

Clontz' bike kicks the tire loose and she stays after it and uses a lot of race track before giving it up!

Salinas had a good leave, but has the bike moves out of the groove and she has to lift.

12:05 p.m. Looks like oil on the track, as the scrubbers are starting to clean the left lane from near the starting line.

Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.897/193.74, Now #2
Right Lane: Scotty Pollacheck Runs 6.873/196.39, Now #1

12:13 p.m. Back to qualifying.

Two strong passes and they move right up to the top of the ladder with sub six ninety runs.

Pollacheck gets away first and stays out in front to take the top spot.

A resurgent Johnson slides right into the number two position.

Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.079 sec., 330ft-2.884, 660ft-4.410/160.38 mph, 1,000ft-5.746.
Scotty Pollacheck's incremental times: 60ft-1.066 sec., 330ft-2.891, 660ft-4.411/161.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.737.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.938/195.70, Now #4
Right Lane: Ryan Oehler Runs 6.937/196.64, Now #3

Two more six second passes and they run just 0.001 apart at the finish.

Hector Arana's incremental times: 60ft-1.057 sec., 330ft-2.897, 660ft-4.444/158.50 mph, 1,000ft-5.790.
Ryan Oehler's incremental times: 60ft-1.078 sec., 330ft-2.906, 660ft-4.451/158.43 mph, 1,000ft-5.795.

Left Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.028/193.24, Now #6
Right Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 6.882/194.02, Now #2

Strong leave for Sampey and the Harley pulls steadily ahead to move up to #2.

Strong pass for Smith too.

Angie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.106 sec., 330ft-2.953, 660ft-4.512/157.74 mph, 1,000ft-5.869.
Angelle Sampey's incremental times: 60ft-1.057 sec., 330ft-2.858, 660ft-4.387/159.93 mph, 1,000ft-5.729.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 6.867/196.36, Now #1
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 8.719/98.04, Now #10

Stoffer as a good leave, but the bike starts a steady move towards the center line and she has to lift.

Arana has a great pass and moves right up to the top spot in ET and is just 0.003 MPH off of top speed.

Hector Arana Jr's incremental times: 60ft-1.053 sec., 330ft-2.862, 660ft-4.394/160.31 mph, 1,000ft-5.727.

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.815/197.33, Now #1
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.940/192.77, Now #8

Smith is taking no prisoners and powers right up to the new top spot with a great ET and almost a mile an hour faster speed.

Krawiec is little off pace to move into #8.

Matt Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.054 sec., 330ft-2.846, 660ft-4.364/161.81 mph, 1,000ft-5.683.
Eddie Krawiec's incremental times: 60ft-1.082 sec., 330ft-2.897, 660ft-4.437/159.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.783.

Left Lane: Jerry Savoie Runs 6.837/193.35, Now #2
Right Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 6.888/194.80, Now #6

Great 1.045 sixty foot time for Savoie and a strong finish for the final number two spot of the session.

Hines, like Krawiec, is a little off pace and will end up in #6.

Jerry Savoie's incremental times: 60ft-1.045 sec., 330ft-2.833, 660ft-4.355/160.81 mph, 1,000ft-5.689.
Andrew Hines' incremental times: 60ft-1.071 sec., 330ft-2.874, 660ft-4.404/159.89 mph, 1,000ft-5.741.

12:23 p.m. Matt Smith is number one one at 6.815 and Jianna Salinas is on the bump spot at 9.251.
