POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 55th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:

Left Lane: Steve Graham Runs 8.866/119.58/0.016, Now #1 C/A Index: 8.85
Right Lane: Paul Mitsos Runs 7.410/144.92/0.260, Now #2 A/AA Index: 7.15

11:29 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 28.95 inches, adjusted altitude 2,477 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Graham struggles, but Mitsos has even more issues.

Right Lane: Ed Sigmon Runs 8.512/154.81/-0.518, Now #1 C/SR Index: 9.03

Priddy leaves with the wheels in the air and keeps them there for almost 200 feet.

Clean pass for Sigmon to start the weekend.

Left Lane: Kurt Hugger Runs 7.358/183.77/-0.672, Now #1 PST Index: 8.03
Right Lane: Jesse Alexandra Runs 8.147/171.62/-0.323, Now #4 FS/SM Index: 8.47

Hugger put up a strong pass to set a mark for the rest of the field.

No problems for Alexander.

Left Lane: Howie Stevens Runs 7.370/185.18/-0.580, Now #2 C/A Index: 7.95
Right Lane: Ralph Van Paepeghem Runs 7.448/178.87/-0.362, Now #5 A/EA Index: 7.81

Van Paepeghem has his hands full at the green, as the altered goes left, then right, and then left again.

Clean and straight for Stevens into the current #2 spot.

Left Lane: Scott McClay Runs 7.270/181.25/-0.550, Now #3 C/ED Index: 7.82
Right Lane: Tom Mettler Runs 7.794/173.92/-0.176, Now #8 PST Index: 7.97

Two strong leaves and McClay gets the best of it with a clean pass.

Mettler is off his usual times.

Left Lane: Lucky Snyder Runs 8.728/163.93/0.088, Now #11 F/A Index: 8.64
Right Lane: Joe Mozeris Runs 6.935/186.25/-0.545, Now #4 B/ED Index: 7.48

Mozeris was the winner last week at Las Vegas and makes a clean pass into the #4 spot.

Snyder struggles down track, after the green.

Freeze is a little lazy off the line and lifts early.

Lee takes his little Honda altered to the #3 spot.

Right Lane: Tony Mandella Runs 8.004/144.46/-0.456, Now #10 A/SMA Index: 8.46

Wheels up leave for Lambeck and a clean pass right up to the #2 spot.

No problems for Mandella, but not his best numbers.

Right Lane: Art Hodges Runs 7.680/178.59/-0.670, Now #2 D/A Index: 8.35

Hodges has the power and drives right into the new number two spot.

Clean pass for Greenheck.

Left Lane: Randy Jones Runs 8.462/157.78/-0.348, Now #16 C/T Index: 8.81
Right Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.279/158.65/-0.541, Now #9 A/EA Index: 7.82

Jones' S-10 is a hand full off the line and it will cost him some ET.

Rampy makes another clean pass.

Right Lane: Frank Aragona Runs 7.417/165.27/-0.623, Now #4 J/AA Index: 8.04

Aragona is the new 2019 Comp Champion and puts up another sixty under pass for the #4 position.

Grima is right there too and slides into #5.

11:48 a.m. Kurt Hugger; is number one and there is no bump spot.
