Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 19th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Jim Campbell Runs 7.742/82.21, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.070/299.00, Was #15

4:59 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 12 percent, barometer 27.97 inches, adjusted altitude 3,673 feet, track temperature 91 degrees.

Campbell hits the throttle, gets about 100 feet out, starts shaking the tires and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.959/96.60, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.464/199.94, Was #17
Right Lane: Steven Densham No Time, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.028/313.29, Was #14

Arend is the only car not in the show and this is his last chance. He gets about 100 feet out, has traction problems and clicks it off.

Densham left before the tree was activated and did not receive a time.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.142/290.07, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.149/264.49, Was #16
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 3.954/316.45, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.920/329.10, Was #12

Haddock leaves the line and had a cylinder out. the car drifts to the left, then back to the right, and he doesn't improve on his earlier time. Pedregon makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 3.943/325.45, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.013/286.62, Was #13
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.861/332.34, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.907/331.61, Was #10

Lindberg foes down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend but he stays in the 13th spot. Langdon makes his quickest pass of the weekend and goes all the way to the fourth spot for now.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.227, 660ft-3.130/284.56 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 3.872/332.34, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.915/330.31, Was #11
Right Lane: Paul Lee No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.881/332.67, Was #9

Hagan goes down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and he moves up to the seventh spot for now. Lee gets out of the groove and starts moving to the left. he crosses the centerline, takes out three timing blocks, then gets it back in the right lane.

This is Lee's first centerline infraction and he will be charged five points.

Lee drops a spot as Hagan goes around him.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 3.924/327.66, Now #11; Best prior run: 3.902/329.67, Was #11
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 7.357/87.78, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.876/332.84, Was #8

Hight gets about 200 feet out, strikes the tires and aborts the run. Capps goes right down the groove with a clean, straight pass but he doesn't improve.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.883 sec., 330ft-2.253, 660ft-3.180/279.04 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.521/188.38, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.880/326.56, Was #9
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 6.908/102.70, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.862/332.02, Was #5

Tasca gets about 200 feet out, strikes the tires and backs off of the throttle. Wilkerson gets about 400 feet out, hazes the tires and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 3.835/331.94, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.872/335.90, Was #6
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 7.022/88.53, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.856/333.58, Was #2

Beckman goes down the groove with an impre3ssive pass, setting the track record and taking the top spot. Todd got about 200 feet out, struck the tires and gave up on the run.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.864 sec., 330ft-2.212, 660ft-3.107/287.78 mph.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 3.840/331.04, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.858/327.35, Was #4
Right Lane: John Force Runs 7.276/87.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.853/330.72, Was #2

Johnson goes right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and he moves up to the second spot. Force gets about 200 feet out and goes up in smoke.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.213, 660ft-3.108/286.74 mph.

Beckman hangs on to the top spot, the third time this season and the 27th time in his career.
