Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 19th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Hannes Wernhart Runs 5.790/255.68, Now #2
Right Lane: Russ Parker Runs 5.757/251.95, Now #1

11:00 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 10 percent, barometer 28.12 inches, adjusted altitude 2,467 feet, track temperature 75 degrees.

Wernhart was moving around a little early in the run but makes a decent pass to start the weekend. Parker makes a clean, straight pass.

Left Lane: Doug Schneider Runs 5.835/252.47, Now #3
Right Lane: Robert Turner Runs 6.454/169.59, Now #4

Schneider makes a little move toward the centerline early but is able to get it in back in the groove and runs a career best to get in the third spot for now. Turner gets out of the groove, makes a move toward the centerline around half track and backs off of the throttle late in the run.

Left Lane: Mike Doushgounian No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Macklyn Runs 5.667/262.13, Now #1

Doushgounian makes a hard move to the right at the hit and crosses the centerline nullifying his run. Macklyn makes a good pass and takes the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.573/263.15, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Ruckman No Time, Now #8

Ruckman breaks after the burnout and does not make a pass. Gasparrelli makes a clean pass, his quickest of the season, and takes the pole for now.

Left Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 5.450/264.23, Now #1
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 10.114/91.73, Now #8

Januik rattles the tires at the hit, drifts to the right and clicks it off. Leanders goes down the groove with a good pass to take the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.906/258.52, Now #7
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 11.081/75.12, Now #10

Payne rattles the tires at the hit, gets about 200 feet out and clicks it off. Hool had problems early but is able to make a full pass.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.426/271.02, Now #1
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 9.121/119.63, Now #10

Gordon goes down the groove with a good pass to take the top spot for now. Whiteley has traction problems early and backs off of the throttle.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.431/271.35, Now #2
Right Lane: Chris Marshall Runs 7.779/145.33, Now #11

Westerfield makes a clean pass and gets in the second spot for now. Marshall has traction problems early and has to give up on the run.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.506/266.42, Now #5
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.429/270.54, Now #2

Hough makes a clean pass and gets in the fifth spot. Bellemeur is able to navigate the right lane and gets in the show in the second spot to end this session.
