CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 12th annual NTK NHRA Carolina Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Jamie Noonan Runs 9.497/96.25, Now #1

12:40 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.45 inches, adjusted altitude 2,338 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Noonan hits the throttle and goes up in smoke. he gets about 200 feet out and backs off the throttle.

Left Lane: Brad McBride Runs 6.589/221.31, Now #1
Right Lane: Earl Nichols Jr. Runs 14.024/59.43, Now #3

McBride strikes the tires at the hit and pedals. he gets the slicks to bite and goes on through with a decent pass. Nichols loses traction and goes up in smoke right off the line. he pedals once, loses traction again and backs off of the throttle.

Left Lane: Dan Dietrich Runs 7.881/111.98, Now #3
Right Lane: Mick Steele Runs 5.378/271.30, Now #1

Dietrich hits the throttle, gets about 300 feet out and has traction problems. Steele makes a clean pass and takes the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Shane Conway Runs 5.225/272.61, Now #1
Right Lane: Brandon Greco Runs 5.420/253.52, Now #3

Conway goes down the groove with an impressive pass and takes the top spot for now. Greco makes a clean run but was falling behind all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Krista Baldwin Runs 15.844/54.68, Now #9
Right Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 5.347/277.77, Now #2

Baldwin boils the hides right off the line and has to give up on the run. Veale goes down the groove with a clean pass and gets in the show in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Dan Mercier Runs 14.836/66.30, Now #10
Right Lane: Tom Fox Jr. Runs 5.323/270.92, Now #2

Mercier strikes the tires at the hit and gives up on the run quickly. Fox goes down the groove with a good pass to get in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.305/273.05, Now #3
Right Lane: Julie Nataas Runs 5.268/277.37, Now #2

Samsel makes a clean pass and gets in the third spot for now. Nataas goes down the groove with a good run and he gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Jackie Fricke Runs 17.413/46.29, Now #15
Right Lane: Josh Hart Runs 5.262/277.49, Now #2

Fricke goes up in smoke at the hit and has to give up on the run. Hart goes down the groove with a clean pass and he gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.308/273.33, Now #6
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Jr. Runs 5.169/281.07, Now #1

Coughlin goes right down the groove with an impressive pass to take the top spot for now. SHields makes a good pass but was falling behind all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 6.376/154.58, Now #12
Right Lane: Megan Meyer Runs 5.363/272.06, Now #9

Cowie has problems a little before half track and is off of the throttle early. Meyer goes down the groove with a clean pass and gets in the ninth spot to end this session.
