BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from round 4 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 65th
annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this
round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior
to run:
Left Lane: Chad Green No Time, Now #24; Best prior run: 5.997/247.57, Was #24
Right Lane: Jose Gonzalez No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 5.913/252.43, Was #23
8:52 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 71 percent,
barometer 29.10 inches, adjusted altitude 3,005 feet, track temperature 87 degrees. Eric Latino
is on the bump spot at 5.819.
A wild pair of runs!
It starts with both cars leaving
hard. Gonzalez is way out in front early and his Camaro gets loose and darts hard towards the
center line. It takes out the 330 lights and he quickly gets the car back in his lane and
slows.
Immediately after that, Green's Camaro snaps sideways and starts to spin around. It
hits the wall and the car gets almost backwards on the track. The rear end flies up into the air
and begins to spin on it's axis in the air. It flies a way further and the chutes come out and drop
the car back on it's wheels facing down track. It was still doing over 190 MPH at half track and
took a while coming to a stop. He was still driving the car and kept it from hitting the wall
again.
It is reported that he is conscious and out of the car. They took extra time
extracting him from the car to be safe. He will be transported to a local hospital as a
precaution.
9:30p.m. Due to extended activities by the NHRA team and the current
weather conditions, the balance of the Q4 session has been scrapped. The third round of qualifying
times will be used to set the field for tomorrow's eliminations.
The planned balance of
today's activities will be transferred to tomorrow's schedule.
