By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 35th annual Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 5.070/229.59, Now #14; Best prior run: 11.509/79.04, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 9.281/66.40, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.843/118.17, Was #14

5:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 59 degrees, relative humidity 33 percent, barometer 28.99 inches, adjusted altitude 1,432 feet, track temperature 83 degrees.

Robert Hight is number one at 3.882 and Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 7.886.

Dueling shake and spin at the green. Burkart does a quick pedal slap and is able to labor the car on down the track and move into the field in the #14 spot.

Diehl's engine was dropping cylinders as soon as he shook and he loses a spot to Burkart.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.022/159.80, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.594/107.30, Was #16
Right Lane: Blake Alexander Runs 4.741/166.11, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.035/270.54, Was #11

Jack Beckman is on the bump spot at 6.594. Densham was just bumped out, is not in the lanes.

Two more shake, spin, lift, pedal, lift and coast. There is a flash from Beckman's engine just as he finally shutoff and he still moves up off the bump to #14.

Alexander will stay #11.

Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 8.160/82.88, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.940/325.30, Was #7

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 5.843.

Langdon will get a single pass. He leaves hard and drives into shake about 100 feet off the line. He coasts on down to stay #7.

Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 8.456/83.58, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.933/322.81, Was #6

Tasca will have a single pass too. The right lane takes another victim. The Mustang has a good 60 foot time, but drives into shake around 100 feet out.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 8.420/80.26, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.960/326.32, Was #10
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 8.377/83.22, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.911/326.95, Was #4

Two leaves, two shakes, two lifts. All of these together!

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 7.825/82.53, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.951/315.49, Was #9
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 3.881/323.43, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.900/327.82, Was #3

Hagan just powers right off the line and drives straight and true right to the finish line to take over the top spot by just 0.001 seconds.

Capps joins the ever growing group of cars with big tire shake and lifts early.

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.860 sec., 330ft-2.230, 660ft-3.139/283.79 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 7.103/89.60, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.950/321.27, Was #8
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 3.885/325.92, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.895/324.44, Was #3

Wilkerson runs right down the right lane in Hagan's tracks and scores a better ET and speed, but will stay #3.

The left lane tune up just isn't there for Force and he shakes and spins early.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.243, 660ft-3.148/285.29 mph.

Right now just 0.004 difference in ET between the top three cars!

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 7.570/87.34, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.911/321.35, Was #5
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 3.867/329.91, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.882/327.27, Was #2

Three great passes in a row!

Todd gets away first, but has the left lane blues too. Early strong numbers, quickly followed by tire shake and spin.

Hight takes the challenge from Hagan and has identical 60 foot numbers. The Prock Rocket picks up the pace from there and flies on down the track to recapture the top spot.

This is Hight's sixty-second number one spot, the second this season.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.860 sec., 330ft-2.228, 660ft-3.131/286.32 mph.

6:00 p.m. Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 5.843.
