Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 54th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ray Martin Runs 4.183/259.31, Now #5; No Prior Run

4:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 8 percent, barometer 28.84 inches, adjusted altitude 2,644 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Tommy Johnson is number one at 3.960 and Jeff Arend is on the bump spot at 5.783.

Nice clean pass for the first half. The Camry starts to move towards the wall down track and he wisely clicks it early to move into the field in the current # 5 spot.

Ray Martin's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.318, 660ft-3.314/257.73 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 3.948/320.66, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.172/111.99, Was #19
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 3.936/325.69, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.130/108.49, Was #18

These two drivers are usually at the pointy end of the field at this point, but no joy in session one. Jonnie Lindberg is on the bump spot at 5.639.

Much better for both lanes!

They leave right together and run right together to the finish line to take over the top two spots. Hight starts to pull ahead right after the 330 lights and takes the new top spot with the fastest speed to boot.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.872 sec., 330ft-2.241, 660ft-3.184/272.83 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.876 sec., 330ft-2.262, 660ft-3.188/279.21 mph.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 8.410/76.14, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.639/122.74, Was #18
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.276/255.15, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.783/120.71, Was #19

Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 4.815.

Lindberg was just bumped out and his struggles continue as the car comes loose before the 330 lights.

Arend gets a near full pass and moves into the field for now in #12.

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.830, 660ft-5.432/081.58 mph.
Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.350, 660ft-3.385/244.47 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 6.800/93.73, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.386/206.54, Was #15
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.396/204.14, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.443/130.25, Was #18

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.632.

No joy here! Both cars strike the tires early and coast on out. Force early and Pedregon before the 660 lights.

Left Lane: Bob Bode No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.346/205.76, Was #14
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 3.936/305.29, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.815/163.67, Was #18

Bode is driving a former Wilkerson Mustang. He gets away hard, goes dead right, pulls it back, goes dead right again to center punch the 330 reflector. Fortunately, Wilkerson was on a strong pass,as Bode's Mustang slides right across the spot where Wilkerson car just was! He coasts on down and will not get a time.

Wilkerson gets it all together for this session and move right up from number eighteen to the current number two spot ona a great looking pass.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.866 sec., 330ft-2.259, 660ft-3.178/280.78 mph.

4:52 p.m. Time for a little dusting and cleaning!

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.246/91.65, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.256/214.62, Was #12
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 3.901/323.35, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.317/217.04, Was #14

5:02 p.m. Back to qualifying! John Force is on the bump spot at 4.386.

Beckman is away first and pulls steadily ahead to near the 330 lights, where Hagan's Charger kicks the tires loose. Beckman has flames up over the roof going down the track and powers right into the new #1 spot in style!

Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.559, 660ft-4.740/097.29 mph.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.220/310.13, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.254/219.12, Was #12
Right Lane: Jim Campbell Runs 8.602/79.35, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.029/307.30, Was #8

Todd gets away hard, has the tires start shaking and spinning. He does a quick pedal slap and stays after it to move up one spot to #11 for now.

Campbell is in trouble early too, but lifts and coasts to stay #8 for now.

J.R. Todd's incremental times: 60ft-0.873 sec., 330ft-2.388, 660ft-3.421/256.94 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 5.127/147.20, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.217/230.06, Was #10
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.950/320.97, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.018/319.52, Was #7

Clean and strong pass for Langdon, right on down the track up two spots to #5.

Tasca has the tires spinning hard around the 60 foot lights and is down early.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.879 sec., 330ft-2.266, 660ft-3.194/277.83 mph.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 3.881/328.54, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.960/317.42, Was #6
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 8.634/71.50, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.965/316.15, Was #7

Last pair of Funny Cars for tonight! They came into the session in #1 and #2 and are now #6 and #7.

Johnson shows big power again and makes the best run of the day, both ET and speed. Big flames from the Make-A-Wish Charger right on down the track to the finish line.

Force's tuneup is just too strong and the tires come loose before the 100 foot mark.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.864 sec., 330ft-2.223, 660ft-3.137/281.42 mph.
