Kalitta, Johnson Jr., Anderson and Smith Race to Victory at Season-Ending Auto Club NHRA Finals



POMONA, Calif. -- Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) claimed NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series world championships Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were victorious in their respective categories at the 24th and final event of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. The Auto Club NHRA Finals marked the conclusion of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion Jerry Savoie rider of the Savoie's Alligator Farm Suzuki.

Doug Kalitta, Mac Tools dragster 3.745 seconds at 326.63 mph defeated J.R. Todd, SealMaster dragster 3.704 seconds at 327.90 mph.

This is Kalitta's third win of the season 42nd of his career and first at the NHRA Finals. Kalitta finishes the season second in the championship points.

Tommy Johnson Jr., Make A Wish Charger Dodge Charger, 3.918 seconds at 320.51 mph defeated. John Force, Peak Chevy Camaro, 3.918 seconds at 321.81 mph.

This is Johnson Jr.'s third win of the season, 15th of his career and first at the NHRA Finals. With the victory Johnson Jr. finishes the season second in points, the best finish of his career.

Greg Anderson, Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro, 6.580 seconds at 210.24 mph defeated Jason Line, Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro, 6.570 seconds at 211.43 mph.

Anderson earned his eighth win of the season, 86th of his career and sixth vic at the NHRA Finals. He finishes second in points.

Matt Smith, Victory Racing/Nitrofish Victory Gunner, 8.044 seconds at 117.34 mph defeated. Angelle Sampey, Precision Service Equipment Buell, Foul - Red Light.

This was Smith's first win of the season, 18th of his career and second at the NHRA Finals. With the win he moved into sixth in points.
