ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 31st annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:

Left Lane: Charlie Stewart Runs 9.286/80.10/0.926, Now #2 J/DA Index: 8.36
Right Lane: Doug Warren Runs 6.595/205.79/-0.575, Now #1 A/DA Index: 7.17

5:33 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 29.54 inches, adjusted altitude 2,836 feet, track temperature 107 degrees.

Warren has a decent run to start the session. Stewart was off the throttle early.

Left Lane: Kenneth Hawkins Runs 7.139/182.60/-0.421, Now #2 B/ND Index: 7.56
Right Lane: Clint Sallee Runs 17.079/47.23/9.809, Now #4 B/DA Index: 7.27

Salle spins the tires at the hit and is off the throttle early. Hawkins makes a decent pass.

Left Lane: Keith Mawhee Runs 7.702/175.96/-0.648, Now #1 D/A Index: 8.35
Right Lane: Ray Goodman Runs 7.494/176.37/-0.416, Now #4 A/EA Index: 7.91

Mawhee makes a good pass and takes the early pole. Goodman makes a clean pass and gets in the fourth spot for now.

Left Lane: Frank Affronti No Time, Now #8 B/EA Index: 8.70
Right Lane: Clint Neff Runs 7.845/139.54/-0.455, Now #3 K/AA Index: 8.30

Affronti timed out and did not make a pass. Neff was off the throttle a little early.

Left Lane: Raymond Martin Runs 10.606/116.18/2.306, Now #8 K/AA Index: 8.30
Right Lane: Dick Maris Runs 6.984/191.65/-0.616, Now #2 C/DA Index: 7.60

Martin makes a quick move to the right at the hit and had to abort the run. Maris makes a good pass and gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Keith Hall Runs 8.319/162.70/-0.721, Now #1 E/SM Index: 9.04
Right Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.273/163.08/-0.637, Now #3 A/EA Index: 7.91

Hall makes an impressive pass and takes the pole for now. Rampy makes a clean pass and gets in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Rick Brown Runs 10.416/112.26/1.536, Now #11 B/TA Index: 8.88
Right Lane: Clark Smiley Runs 7.308/190.70/-0.652, Now #2 BB/A Index: 7.96

Brown hits the throttle, makes a hard move to the right and has to back off the throttle quickly. Smiley makes a clean straight pass and gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Scott Benham Runs 8.170/165.19/-0.630, Now #5 B/T Index: 8.80
Right Lane: Don Alexander Runs 7.600/171.99/-0.330, Now #11 C/ED Index: 7.93

Left Lane: Kevin Self Runs 7.808/167.24/-0.672, Now #3 F/EA Index: 8.48
Right Lane: Jim Greenheck Runs 7.257/186.20/-0.683, Now #2 C/AA Index: 7.94

Greenheck goes right down the groove with a decent pass and ges in the second spot for now. Self was a little behind and gets in the third spot.

Left Lane: Dennis Smiley Runs 7.254/182.75/-0.296, Now #14 B/ED Index: 7.55
Right Lane: Brian Browell No Time, Now #20 D/D Index: 7.86

Browell has problems getting the engine fired and does not make a pass.

Left Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.889/155.81/-0.651, Now #6 A/SMA Index: 8.54
Right Lane: Bill Kent Runs 6.613/203.55/-0.657, Now #4 B/D Index: 7.27

Right Lane: Craig Bourgeois Runs 12.701/73.67/5.141, Now #20 B/ND Index: 7.56

Bourgeois hits the throttle and breaks the tires loose. he makes a move to the right and he backs off the throttle quickly.
