Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: James Campbell Runs 11.110/74.79, Now #1

1:56 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 19 percent, barometer 28.84 inches, adjusted altitude 3,073 feet, track temperature 118 degrees.

This will be the second outing for Campbell in The Worsham Family Funny Car.

The car starts to move at the green and the tires were up in smoke within a few feet.

Right Lane: John Hale Runs 4.287/303.09, Now #1

Another single.

Hale's Charger was just a little lazy off the line and dropped a cylinder down track, but he gets to the finish line under power to put a good number on the boards to tune to.

John Hale's incremental times: 60ft-0.968 sec., 330ft-2.462, 660ft-3.478/255.53 mph.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 3.998/315.42, Now #1
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 14.804/61.82, Now #4

Our first pair.

POW! ...and we get our first three second pass of the session. Johnson takes the "Make a Wish" Charger right on down Broadway for a great looking pass and the new top spot.

Pedregon's Camry struck the tires hard high at the green and he slowed.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.279, 660ft-3.226/272.72 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan No Time, Now #7
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.055/311.99, Now #2

Weird burnout for Hagan. Almost like no throttle stop and he quickly lifted the pedal. He backs up and is told to kill the engine.

Wilkerson makes a strong pass in the right lane without any drama to move into #2 for now.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.311, 660ft-3.276/268.17 mph.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.063/312.13, Now #3
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 8.307/80.95, Now #5

DeJoria rolls right into the first beam quickly. The Camry has a strong 60 foot time and then strikes the tires.

Head takes his time and stages. He matches DeJoria's 0.893 sixty foot time, but powers on down the track for a clean pass into the number three spot for now.

Chad Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.893 sec., 330ft-2.318, 660ft-3.284/267.96 mph.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 3.930/323.97, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 3.993/316.08, Now #2

Say Hello to your new number one qualifier, with a new track ET record to boot. A strong 0.864 sixty foot time and she drives on by Beckman going down the track.

A strong pass for Beckman too and the new #2 spot on the ladder. Good clean run.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.864 sec., 330ft-2.239, 660ft-3.178/276.35 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.872 sec., 330ft-2.266, 660ft-3.224/270.64 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 3.990/313.73, Now #2
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.186/263.77, Now #7

The rest of the JFR funny cars comes to the line.

A strong leave together and Hight loses a cylinder early.

Force runs hard until right near the light, where there is smoke from the engine and it costs him.

No oil, so the next two are fired.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.272, 660ft-3.220/272.89 mph.
Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.353, 660ft-3.340/262.08 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 3.980/316.52, Now #2
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.026/315.34, Now #6

The Pomona final round pair come to the line for a rerun. Capps was first there.

A great side by side pair to wrap up round one of FC qualifying. Worsham gets a big advantage off the line at the green and pulls steadily ahead to move into the final #2 spot on the ladder.

Capps makes a strong pass without any obvious issues for the #6 spot.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.878 sec., 330ft-2.262, 660ft-3.209/273.16 mph.
