Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 51st annual Auto Club NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Shawn Reed Runs 7.444/88.27, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 21 percent, barometer 28.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,663 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Reed was loose early and apparently the engine let go as the word from the Safety Safari is there is oil on the track. This is his first oil down of the season so it will cost him $1000.


Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 6.714/88.07, Now #2
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.143/210.05, Now #1

McClenathan started to shake the tires early in the run and clicked it off. Lucas started to haze the tires before half track and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Billy Torrence Runs 4.258/197.33, Now #2
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.097/136.41, Now #3

Torrence started to lose traction just past half track and clicked it off. Buff started to lose traction and drop cylinders before half track and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.949/100.31, Now #6
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.775/323.89, Now #1

McMillen started to lose traction and clicked it off. Millican launched hard and keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight to go to the number one spot. Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.131, 660ft-3.028/283.49 mph.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 3.946/270.43, Now #3
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 3.791/327.03, Now #2

Todd was on a good looking pass until right in the lights when the engine let go with a big fireball. J.R. Todd's incremental times: 60ft-0.854 sec., 330ft-2.199, 660ft-3.129/273.39 mph. Connolly launched hard and keep it hooked up to go to the number two spot. Dave Connolly's incremental times: 60ft-0.850 sec., 330ft-2.157, 660ft-3.050/285.59 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 4.936/146.34, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 5.603/114.77, Now #8

Langdon started to haze the tires just past the 330-foot mark and clicked it off. Torrence started to haze the tires before 330 feet and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.801/320.20, Now #3
Right Lane: Brittany Force Runs 4.015/228.19, Now #5

Kalitta was straight down the groove with a good clean pass to go to the number three spot. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.154, 660ft-3.051/283.85 mph. Force was on a good pass until it started to haze the tires and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Richie Crampton Runs 4.633/160.44, Now #9
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.766/324.67, Now #1

Crampton with a puff of tire smoke around 330-foot mark and clicked it off. Dixon launched hard and keep it hooked up and hitting on all eight to go to the number one spot. Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.141, 660ft-3.026/287.66 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.788/324.36, Now #3
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 6.261/103.71, Now #14

Schumacher was straight down the groove with a nice straight pass to go to the number three spot. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.138, 660ft-3.040/282.30 mph. Brown starts to smoke the tires early and clicks it off.
