Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 30th annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Ro Yale Runs 5.891/246.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Nancy Matter No Time, Now #2

12:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.66 inches, adjusted altitude 2,485 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.
Matter fires up the engine and then the engine dies and she does not make a pass.

Yale makes a clean pass to start the session.

Left Lane: Steve Burck No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 5.621/255.82, Now #1

Burck drifted to the right, got the car straightened out, then started drifting to the right again. He crosses the centerline, collecting a couple of timing blocks near the end of the run. Brown went right down the groove with a career best pass to take the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Scott McVey Runs 8.812/129.37, Now #4
Right Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 5.757/251.49, Now #2

Van Hauen makes a clean pass and gets in the second spot for now. McVey hit the throttle and lost traction. he makes a move toward the wall, pedaled a couple of times and got the car straightened out.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 9.842/86.82, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 8.876/144.13, Now #5

Bellemeur rattled the tires at the hit, made a move toward the wall and backed off the throttle about 200 feet out. Gasparrelli started shaking the tires early, drifted to the left and backed off the throttle about 250 feet out.

Left Lane: Mike Doushgounian Runs 8.356/106.36, Now #5
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.614/257.78, Now #1

Foster hits the throttle, the rear of the car starts wagging around, but he stays on the throttle and makes a good pass to take the top spot for now. Doushgounian rattles the tires and has to give up on the run about 200 feet out.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.598/257.43, Now #1
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 9.157/95.92, Now #9

Payne gets about 200 feet out, rattles the tires and backs off the throttle. Hough goes right down the groove with a good run to move into the top spot.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.592/258.76, Now #1
Right Lane: Kris Hool Runs 5.645/259.81, Now #5

Westerfield drifts to the right, then he steers it back to the left, gets it back in the groove and goes on through with the quickest pass so far. Hool was moving around all the way through the run but stays on the throttle and gets into the fifth spot for now.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.573/264.08, Now #2
Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.494/268.81, Now #1

Lombardo makes an impressive pass for the conditions and takes the top spot for now. Gordon was moving around all the way through the run but manages to get into the second spot.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.594/261.47, Now #5
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.509/267.53, Now #2

A couple of good, straight passes here, both right down the groove. Harker moves into the second spot, Veney the fifth.

Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 5.690/260.86, Now #11
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.589/263.87, Now #4

Lindberg rattles the tires about 60 feet out, does a quick pedal and recovers. Whiteley makes a clean, straight pass to get in the fourth spot to end this session.
