CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Eighth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Dave Richards Runs 4.582/200.68, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.084/172.43, Was #14 5:30 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 43 percent, barometer 29.19 inches, adjusted altitude 3,454 feet, track temperature 119 degrees. Richards was
on a decent pass but the car nosed over about 600 feet out, not sure why. He still improves and
moves up to the 13th spot. Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.062/307.86, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.080/303.30, Was #10 Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 4.204/291.63, Now #12; Best prior run: 18.328/41.37, Was #17 Force goes right down the groove with her quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a spot to ninth. Westerfield makes a clean, straight pass and gets in the show, bumping out DeJoria. Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.119/302.28, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.079/301.33, Was #10 Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.208/293.54, Now #13; Best prior run: 9.084/88.95, Was #17 DeJoria does what she needs to do, going right down the groove with her quickest pass of the weekend to get back in the show. Pedregon makes a clean pass but doesn't improve. Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.060/300.93, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.022/304.60, Was #8 Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 5.808/276.01, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.623/268.97, Was #17 Head was just bumped out of the show. If he gets back in here he will bump out Gilbertson. Gilbertson has not made it back from the explosion he had in the first round of qualifying today and would not have a chance to get back in the show. Head smokes the tires at the hit, pedals a couple of times, but can't get the car to recover. This is the first time head has failed to qualify since his first race in Gainesville in 2013. Beckman makes a clean,
straight pass but doesn't improve. Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.064/311.77, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.004/313.80, Was #6 Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.190/297.02, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.015/314.02, Was #7 Force makes a clean pass, the third quickest of the round so far, but he doesn't improve. Hagan makes a clean pass but was falling behind all the way through the run. Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.051/311.85, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.004/313.95, Was #5 Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.532/187.86, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.994/317.34, Was #3 Hight makes an impressive pass for the conditions, the quickest of the round so far. Capps was on a decent pass to the 600 foot mark, then bangs the blower and the car noses over. Word from the track is he oiled the track and will be charged his first of the season which
will cost him $1000. Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.660/172.32, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.971/312.42, Was #1 Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.080/305.70, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.993/318.32, Was #2 Worsham makes a clean pass but can't improve. Johnson started hazing the tires about 600 feet out and he had to back off the throttle early.
