CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Eighth annual NHRA Carolina Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Dave Richards Runs 4.257/293.15, Now #1

4:08 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 89 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.25 inches, adjusted altitude 3,502 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Richards starts drifting to the right early in the run, crosses the finish line, then scrapes the wall in the shutdown area so his run will count. He manages to hang on and make a career best pass, both ET and speed.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.243/280.72, Now #2
Right Lane: John Hale Runs 4.198/272.94, Now #1

Hale was on a good run but was out of power just before he reached the finish line. Pedregon makes a clean pass but was falling back all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 10.440/69.10, Now #5
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.114/302.75, Now #1

Head has a hole out when he stages, hits the throttle and makes a quick move to the right and he has to give up on the run. Force goes right down the groove and takes the early pole.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.714/74.80, Now #6
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.079/301.33, Now #1

Pedregon has a quick move off the line, a .894, and he goes right down the groove with a clean pass. DeJoria's car was a little sluggish off the line and she backs off the throttle about 500 feet out.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.091/301.67, Now #3
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.069/305.98, Now #1

Hight has the quickest sixty foot time so far this round, a .890, and he makes the quickest pass of the round so far to take the pole for now. Wilkerson makes a clean pass and gets in the field in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.018/303.64, Now #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.083/306.26, Now #4

Capps makes an impressive pass here and goes to the top spot for now. Force makes a clean pass and gets in the fourth spot for now.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.869 sec., 330ft-2.257, 660ft-3.226/267.37 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.072/299.66, Now #4
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.047/310.20, Now #2

A good side-by-side run, they were glued together all the way through the run. Johnson gets in the show in the second spot, Worsham in fourth for now.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.063/302.89, Now #4
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.027/307.86, Now #2

Beckman and Hagan both make good runs and put the Team Schumacher cars in the top four spots to end this session.
