Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 61st annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ulf Leanders No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.192/259.91, Was #18
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.071/243.72, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.951/240.12, Was #17

8:52 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 71 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,651 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

John Lombardo is number one at 5.553 and Steve Burck is on the bump spot at 5.864.

Wild run for the first pair. They leave just 0.010 apart and run together to near the 330 lights. Leanders' Monte Carlo gets in trouble and he does a quick pedal slap. That gets the car even looser and he powers over the two 660 reflectors. He finally gives it up and coasts.

Butler slows from his prior best and will stay #17.

Ulf Leanders' incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.797, 660ft-4.075/191.48 mph, 1,000ft-5.332.
Wayne Butler's incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.744, 660ft-4.042/191.13 mph, 1,000ft-5.146.

Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 13.252/59.56, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.845/249.12, Was #14
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.821/248.84, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.864/238.05, Was #16

8:59 a.m. Clean up done, back to qualifying.

Burck missed the first two sessions and needs to get off the bump spot. He makes a little better pass and moves two spots up the ladder,

Bogolo gets pushed back a spot by Burck, as he has to get off the pedal early. Too much shake and spin to drive through.

Steve Burck's incremental times: 60ft-1.012 sec., 330ft-2.600, 660ft-3.851/197.74 mph, 1,000ft-4.918.

Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.623/257.87, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.765/254.81, Was #13
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 5.728/256.55, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.856/252.33, Was #16

Paul Noakes is now on the bump spot. Noakes gets away first by a bunch and uses the better conditions today to move to the #14 spot.

Tigges finally gets it all together today and power on down the track and into the top half of the field.

Fred Tigges' incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.508, 660ft-3.718/205.07 mph, 1,000ft-4.750.

Tony Bogolo is on the bump spot at 5.845.

Foster has great early numbers, but the blower goes bang. The chutes come out and he is off the throttle before mid-track.

Pomponio finds a bunch of power and puts it to the track to move seven spots on the ladder and go up into the top half of the field.

Dan Pomponio's incremental times: 60ft-0.977 sec., 330ft-2.515, 660ft-3.720/205.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.747.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.551/262.28, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.647/259.11, Was #11
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.607/259.01, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.656/256.70, Was #12

Westerfield is no slouch either and moves up into the top half of the field.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.953 sec., 330ft-2.486, 660ft-3.680/207.43 mph, 1,000ft-4.695.
Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.964 sec., 330ft-2.511, 660ft-3.715/206.20 mph, 1,000ft-4.739.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.576/264.13, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.627/261.83, Was #11
Right Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.565/259.51, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.635/256.45, Was #12

A terrific side by side pass for the pair. They leave almost together and are just 0.01 difference in ET. Strong runs into the new #3 and #4 spots.

Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.535, 660ft-3.721/209.23 mph, 1,000ft-4.726.
Andy Bohl's incremental times: 60ft-0.947 sec., 330ft-2.473, 660ft-3.675/205.85 mph, 1,000ft-4.699.

Veney marches the Camaro off the line and down the track to jump six spots on the ladder into the #5 spot.

Lindberg had initial good numbers, but can't keep the pace. He gets pushed back a spot.

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-0.962 sec., 330ft-2.566, 660ft-3.778/206.35 mph, 1,000ft-4.794.
Todd Veney's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.520, 660ft-3.712/208.17 mph, 1,000ft-4.723.

Left Lane: Mike Doushgounian Runs 5.547/263.62, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.547/263.62, Was #1
Right Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 7.777/117.61, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.605/259.36, Was #9

Terrific pass for Doushgounian and the new top spot. Big speed to boot.

Ferro is stronger to the 330 lights and has to pedal. He quickly is coasting. Mike Doushgounian's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.494, 660ft-3.682/208.75 mph, 1,000ft-4.695.

Left Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.484/268.81, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.553/266.64, Was #3
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.509/266.53, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.586/263.00, Was #7

WOW! Lombardo rockets off the line and thunders on down the track for the first forty pass of the weekend. His big speed is the fifth fastest ever in TAFC! Amazing!

Harker's pass was almost as stout and he slide right into the field behind Lombardo in the #2 spot.

John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.484, 660ft-3.656/211.89 mph, 1,000ft-4.647.
Steve Harker's incremental times: 60ft-0.961 sec., 330ft-2.485, 660ft-3.664/210.97 mph, 1,000ft-4.664.
