By Larry Sullivan

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 61st annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Jay Payne No Time, Now #33; Best prior run: 11.914/98.89, Was #33

6:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.17 inches, adjusted altitude 3,485 feet, track temperature 115 degrees.

Harold Martin is on the bump spot at 6.002.

Payne's car got very loose and headed for the centerline, then he finally let it cross the line between the 330 and 660-foot markers and he finished the run in the left lane.

Left Lane: Jim Bell Runs 6.699/185.54, Now #32; Best prior run: 6.711/188.62, Was #31
Right Lane: Richard Snavely Runs 5.930/256.36, Now #4; Best prior run: 9.265/97.83, Was #32

Nice run by Snavely after two aborted runs and he's in the top half of the field. Bell ran with Snavely to about the 330-foot marker, then he fell back and slowed.

Richard Snavely's incremental times: 60ft-1.035 sec., 330ft-2.739, 660ft-3.995/199.70 mph, 1,000ft-5.048.

Left Lane: Gerry Capano Runs 9.087/117.50, Now #29; Best prior run: 6.119/234.04, Was #28
Right Lane: Bill Glidden Runs 6.008/236.84, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.317/181.69, Was #31

Now Pete Farber is on the bump spot at 5.997.

Glidden made a good-looking run, but came up short of the already-quick bump time. Capano shook and slowed early in the run.

Bill Glidden's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.640, 660ft-3.943/189.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.060.

Left Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.059/239.23, Now #27; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Kevin Fiscus Runs 5.978/246.44, Now #13; No Prior Run

Two more good-looking runs, Fiscus' run quick enough to put him in the field and set the quickest bump ever for the Pro Mods in U.S. Nationals competition.

Now Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 5.994.

Left Lane: Shane Molinari Runs 6.110/246.66, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.028/246.80, Was #26
Right Lane: Dan Stevenson Runs 6.012/242.93, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.129/240.85, Was #31

Molinari's car stopped at the end of the burnout and was pushed back. The car refired and he quickly pulled up and staged.

Stevenson made his best run of the event - still outside the field, but he's headed in the right direction.

Molinari made a full pass, but lost a tenth somewhere along the way.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.002/240.55, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.020/238.26, Was #26
Right Lane: Doug Winters Runs 6.028/240.12, Now #28; Best prior run: 6.115/237.67, Was #30

Stevens and Winters both made their best runs of the event - not good enough to get into the field, but one more small improvement and they will get in.

Left Lane: Jeff Naiser Runs 5.990/239.74, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.010/240.51, Was #25
Right Lane: Jimmy Widener Runs 9.501/95.50, Now #30; Best prior run: 6.077/233.76, Was #30

Widener shook and slowed. Naiser stepped up for the third run in a row and this time it got him into the field - on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 5.969/241.02, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.006/239.31, Was #22
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 6.064/240.29, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.008/242.54, Was #24

Harper cranked the Viper up another notch and bumped his way into the field. Whiteley made a good run, but failed to improve. Both cars trailed a little piston smoke in the lights.

Now Sidnei Frigo is on the bump spot at 5.980.

Left Lane: Pete Farber Runs 6.151/241.11, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.997/243.94, Was #19
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 5.988/226.47, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.006/238.81, Was #23

Farber lost a lot of time in the first half of the run. King improved, but came up short of the bump time. He also trailed a lot of smoke in the shutdown area, leaving a trail of oil in the shutdown area. It's his first of the event, so it will cost him five points and $500.

Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 9.171/99.47, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.994/239.95, Was #19
Right Lane: Bob Rahaim Runs 8.703/107.30, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.005/243.90, Was #23

Lots of shake and Castellana skated out toward the wall. They both lifted.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Jr. Runs 5.903/252.24, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.979/249.95, Was #15
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 7.288/138.33, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.002/241.24, Was #21

The first half of Coughlin's run was so-so, the wheels up and the car moving around a lot. Then it came down and hooked up just as the turbo power kicked in and the car leaped forward on the top half. Martin had a good first 330 feet, then the car started moving around and he lifted.

Troy Coughlin Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-1.023 sec., 330ft-2.704, 660ft-3.956/198.99 mph, 1,000ft-5.013.

Left Lane: Clint Satterfield No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.959/248.39, Was #11
Right Lane: Sidnei Frigo Runs 5.851/252.71, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.980/246.80, Was #16

Satterfield's car kept moving to the right and took out the 1,000-foot timing markers. Meanwhile, Frigo got his car hooked up and blistered the top end of the run to go from the bump spot to the #1 spot.

Sidnei Frigo's incremental times: 60ft-1.021 sec., 330ft-2.673, 660ft-3.912/201.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.962.

Both ET and speed are career-best numbers for Frigo.

Now Kevin Fiscus is on the bump spot at 5.978.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 5.885/252.19, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.948/249.12, Was #10
Right Lane: Steve Matusek Runs 11.033/98.33, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.976/245.72, Was #15

Matusek lost traction early in the run. Coughlin made a strong run to move up to the #2 spot.

Troy Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-1.022 sec., 330ft-2.695, 660ft-3.940/199.43 mph, 1,000ft-4.995.

Left Lane: Michael Biehle Runs 5.878/253.28, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.948/252.38, Was #10
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.061/241.67, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.962/242.89, Was #13

Biehle's ET and speed in the second session today were both career-bests.

Two strong runs, Janis quicker to 330 feet, then Biehle's turbo car just plain ran away and hid, once again improving his career-best ET and speed.

Michael Biehle's incremental times: 60ft-1.037 sec., 330ft-2.685, 660ft-3.931/199.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.988.
Mike Janis' incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.679, 660ft-4.013/188.12 mph, 1,000ft-5.128.

Left Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.047/199.20, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.940/237.25, Was #10
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.913/246.48, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.952/245.00, Was #11

Knowles had a strong run to half track, but he slowed on the top end. Rowe also had a strong run to half track, but his car kept on pulling the rest of the way.

Mike Knowles' incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.623, 660ft-3.916/191.84 mph, 1,000ft-5.017.
Danny Rowe's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.622, 660ft-3.908/193.71 mph, 1,000ft-4.998.

Left Lane: Don Walsh Runs 9.757/105.67, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.940/250.74, Was #10
Right Lane: Steven Whiteley Runs 5.898/246.71, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.920/245.76, Was #8

Walsh just sat there when Whiteley launched, then he just drove it down the track. Whiteley made a strong run and joined the top three cars in the eighties.

Steven Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.617, 660ft-3.900/193.93 mph, 1,000ft-4.985.

Left Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 5.845/239.78, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.908/245.09, Was #7
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 5.895/246.80, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.901/246.48, Was #5

Last pair. alBalooshi streaked down the track and went right down the track, The engine laid down in the final 100 feet of the track with some wounded pistons, but it stayed together long enough to get the top spot.

Smith made a good run, with no visible damage and is the sixth driver in the eighties so far.

Apparently the engine smoke included some oil, they are cleaning the shutdown area. That will cost alBalooshi 5 points and $500.

Khalid alBalooshi's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.572, 660ft-3.834/195.48 mph, 1,000ft-4.916.
Rickie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.628, 660ft-3.901/195.14 mph, 1,000ft-4.982.
