Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 50th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.092/313.95, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.107/150.00, Now #14; No Prior Run

1:21 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 52 percent, barometer 28.90 inches, adjusted altitude 2,545 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Tommy Johnson is number one at 4.003.

Westerfield has a McLeod Clutches body on the car today, after yesterday's carnage. The car is lazy off the line and can't come near yesterday's best. The car ends up stuck on the track at the top end.

Force was near the bottom of the ladder coming into the round, but lays down a good strong pass to ensure a place on the ladder for tomorrow. They have numbers to tune to in the final session.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.322, 660ft-3.310/263.72 mph.
Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.928 sec., 330ft-2.394, 660ft-3.644/171.21 mph.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.136/305.84, Now #12; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #22; No Prior Run

1:27 p.m. The track is clean and time to run.

Haddock's crew can't get the Solera to start and the car is pushed away. He will get one more chance later today to get into the tough field.

A nice clean pass for Densham this time and he moves all the way up from near the bottom of the list to the current #12 spot.

Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.914 sec., 330ft-2.346, 660ft-3.335/259.81 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 7.520/83.93, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.126/287.05, Was #11
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.433/199.97, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.062/314.97, Was #7

There two are already in the field and looking to improve.

Arend is away first and has a little better short times, but shakes and spins before the 330 lights.

Worsham gets down towards the top end before dumping early.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.313, 660ft-3.329/226.09 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.029/313.29, Now #6; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.107/299.80, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.011/311.77, Was #3

Fast Jack lives up to his name on this pass and gets his full pass. It's a good one and he powers up into the top half of the field for now.

Pedregon makes a clean pass too, just a little slower than Beckman. Nice!

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.280, 660ft-3.249/266.16 mph.
Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.320, 660ft-3.299/260.86 mph.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.016/319.60, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.063/314.83, Was #9
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.062/295.34, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.020/314.39, Was #5

Hagan need to get more "Little Points" than Force and has just two more chances to do so. The team gives him the car and he does his job well to run the quickest pass of the session, so far. It's a strong pass and he gets into the top half of the field in the number five spot.

DeJoria gets most of the way to the finish line under power, but clicks it early. A good ET for the speed.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.016/319.60, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.063/314.83, Was #9
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.062/295.34, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.020/314.39, Was #5

Hagan

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 18.203/721.92, Now #18; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.126/305.63, Now #12; No Prior Run

Bode spins the tires at the green and then has the blower bang. The chutes are out and the car stops on the track right after the finish line.

A good tune up pass for Tasca, as he finally gets a full pass.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.329, 660ft-3.328/257.83 mph.

Left Lane: John Bojec Runs 4.235/298.47, Now #17; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 4.693/187.34, Now #18; No Prior Run

Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 4.199 and will run in the next pair.

Capps gets to mid track and lights up the engine a bunch. The fire bottles knock it down quickly, but it's going to be expensive.

Bojec picks up a little ET, but misses the bump for this session. That's a career best speed and ET for him.

John Bojec's incremental times: 60ft-0.945 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.419/255.53 mph.

1:43 p.m. The Cold Fire liquid is on the track, so we will get a brief time out for dusting and cleaning.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.102/313.73, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.199/291.45, Was #16
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.806/165.88, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.015/316.60, Was #4

1:55 p.m. Back to qualifying. Hagan laid down a great number earlier and Force needs to be just a little better.

Force has good small numbers , but the car gets loose and he has to lift.

Great clean and strong pass for Wilkerson. He finds a bunch of power and puts it to the ground to move four spots up the ladder to the current #12 spot.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.347, 660ft-3.320/266.11 mph.
John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.889 sec., 330ft-2.304, 660ft-3.478/188.28 mph.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.070/312.93, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.078/313.88, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.134/306.12, Now #15; No Prior Run

Jeff Diehl is on the bump spot at 4.196.

Jim Head has made it back to the track this weekend after a vacation injury to his foot. He is still not well yet and has a "Senior Skateboard" to get around with. It hasn't affected his tuning ability and his son, Chad, runs another "ten" to stay number ten. Great looking pass.

Pedregon gets his first full pass and pumps into the field in the current #15 spot.

Chad Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.319, 660ft-3.289/267.48 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.346, 660ft-3.335/261.22 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.479/192.71, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.036/317.49, Was #8
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.423/203.49, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.196/266.27, Was #17

Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.136.

Two great eight mile passes, but neither car can get to the finish line under power.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.879 sec., 330ft-2.283, 660ft-3.334/217.60 mph.
Jeff Diehl's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.306, 660ft-3.340/226.66 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.021/317.42, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.005/317.79, Was #2
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 7.107/91.01, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.003/317.34, Was #1

These two can spoil Hagan's current points advantage by running quicker than him. Force has to be rooting for both of them.

Nope, not this time! They leave the starting line just 0.001 apart and Capps pulls quickly ahead before the sixty foot lights. Johnson's car strikes the tires right after that and he has to watch the NAPA car disappear in the distance.

Nice pass for Capps, but no improvement.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.879 sec., 330ft-2.286, 660ft-3.249/269.46 mph.

2:09 p.m. Gary Densham is on the bump spot at 4.136.
