Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. -=20 Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag = Racing Series, 50th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed = this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:=20
Left Lane: John Bojec Runs 4.300/287.78, Now #11; No Prior = Run
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.259/297.02, Now #10; No = Prior Run

3:56 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, = relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 28.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,602 feet, track temperature 80 degrees.

Cruz Pedregon is = number one at 4.011 and Tim Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 7.273.

First pass for Bojec and Pedregon was shut off = earlier.

Two clean passes, but they may not last long in the field, as conditions are still great for high performance.

John = Bojec's incremental times: 60ft-0.941 sec., 330ft-2.440, 660ft-3.467/252.19 mph.
Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.921 = sec., 330ft-2.436, 660ft-3.443/255.19 mph.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.078/313.88, Now #8; Best prior = run: 9.162/71.18, Was #20
Right Lane: Terry Haddock No Time, Now #22; Best prior run: = 12.252/77.59, Was #22

Jack Beckman is on the bump spot at 4.409.

Haddock = is a no show and Head will get a single. Jim Head tune up takes the Camry right down the track and into the top eight. Lots of = header flames for the fans!

Chad Head's incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.300/266.90 mph.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 8.927/89.66, Now #21; Best = prior run: 8.348/92.68, Was #20
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.495/79.69, Now #17; Best = prior run: 11.406/77.65, Was #21

John Bojec is on the bump spot at 4.300.

Densham's = Impala is smoking the tires right off the line, quickly followed by Tasca. They will have to wait for tomorrow to = improve.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 9.513/63.82, Now #20; Best = prior run: 8.095/70.57, Was #19
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 4.837/165.60, Now #14; Best prior = run: 8.279/80.97, Was #20

Force shakes and spins the tires right off the line. Capps = gets to around the 330 lights and lights the tires too.

The engine decides it has had enough and most of the insides = try to get outside. A big flash and then flames and smoke going down the track. He stops the car on the track and the Safety = Safari folks are on it in a instant.

4:08 p.m. We get a time out for clean up in the right lane.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.465/210.97, Now #15; Best prior = run: 7.534/91.85, Was #19
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.196/266.27, Now #10; Best = prior run: 7.186/94.33, Was #15

4:21 p.m. Back to qualifying.

That way a little = weird. Bode was running strong until right at the 660 lights and the chutes blossom. He drives into them for a while before giving it = up.

Nice improvement for Diehl to bump into the field in the new number ten position.

Bob Bode's incremental times: = 60ft-0.915 sec., 330ft-2.381, 660ft-3.464/231.68 mph.
Jeff Diehl's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.337, = 660ft-3.329/255.87 mph.

4:24 p.m. Stuff on the track in the left lane.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.005/317.79, Now #1; Best prior = run: 7.473/79.42, Was #18
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield No Time, Now #12; Best prior = run: 4.229/233.20, Was #11

4:45 p.m. That took a while, but the call goes out to start = the engines.

The good news: Capps takes the NAPA Charger right to the top of the ladder on a terrific looking pass, just = missing a THREE by 0.005!

The bad news: Westerfield's second national competition pass gets way more exciting = that he planned. The car left hard and ran straight until after the 660 lights. He looked to have nipped a head gasket and started = to get pushed towards the center line. The engine lights up right after that and drives the Charger right across the centerline = taking out the finish line reflectors. The clock recorded a 4.166 @269.62. There's a bunch of oil on the track, so we are down again = for clean up.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.886 sec., 330ft-2.283, 660ft-3.236/269.94 mph.
Shane = Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.907 sec., 330ft-2.338, 660ft-3.321/258.57 mph.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.199/291.45, Now #12; Best = prior run: 7.273/84.66, Was #18
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 8.569/81.19, Now #7; Best prior = run: 4.062/314.97, Was #7

5:02 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, = relative humidity 65 percent, barometer 28.86 inches, adjusted altitude 2,519 feet, track temperature 75 degrees.

Worsham is = just a little quicker at the green and just a little quicker to sixty feet, but the tires start to chatter and the car moves out of = the groove. He quickly lifts.

Wilkerson had the header flames over the roof, as the car went down the track, but they started = to get wacky near the finish line and he lifts early. We get another delay, as the car is locked up on the track at the top = end.

Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.905 sec., 330ft-2.372, 660ft-3.382/256.02 mph.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 7.993/71.51, Now #16; Best = prior run: 4.409/206.61, Was #16
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.003/317.34, Now #1; = Best prior run: 4.031/316.08, Was #5

5:08 p.m.

Johnson nips his teammate, Capps, number = one time by just 0.002 to take over the top time on a straight and true pass.

Beckman's Charger was away first and had = a better 60 foot time, but the slicks were spinning after that.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.884 sec., = 330ft-2.283, 660ft-3.236/272.01 mph.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 8.891/71.15, Now #10; Best prior = run: 4.126/287.05, Was #10
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 8.532/78.76, Now #5; Best = prior run: 4.020/314.39, Was #5

Alexis DeJoria unveiled her new XO Patr=F3n Caf=E9 Incendio = Hot Rod wrap earlier today. She'll be running this for one race only.

Both cars had strong short times and then both cars spun = the tires hard. It got very quiet quickly.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 7.467/79.81, Now #8; Best prior = run: 4.063/314.83, Was #8
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.281/228.27, Now #4; Best prior = run: 4.015/316.60, Was #4

Hagan was off the line first and had a safe sixty foot time, = but the slicks started to spin and turn the car sideways quickly.

Force's Mustang ran on down to after the 660 lights, = before he had to give it up too.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.896 sec., 330ft-2.308, 660ft-3.309/236.67 = mph.

No change in the little point between these two, so we go into Saturday with Force just one round behind Hagan.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.036/317.49, Now #6; Best = prior run: 4.051/317.87, Was #6
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 8.560/82.04, Now #3; Best = prior run: 4.011/311.77, Was #3

The flames from Pedregon's engine drop right off the line = and he is done.

Hight powers on down the track with a better ET to stay #6 for today.

Robert Hight's incremental = times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.304, 660ft-3.266/269.78 mph.

5:20 p.m. Tommy Johnson is number one with a stout 4.003 and Tim = Wilkerson is on the bump spot at 4.199.
