Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual Pep Boys NHRA Carolina Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #17; No Prior Run

2:09 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 72 percent, barometer 29.37 inches, adjusted altitude 3,071 feet, track temperature 107 degrees.

Gilbertson made one attempt yesterday, popped the supercharger burst panel about 100 feet off the starting line. There are 17 cars here, so somebody will be voted off the island today.

Right now, it looks like it will be Gilbertson. They pulled the car up in front of the waterbox and had a starter issue and the car did not fire. Bummer!!

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.437/204.11, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.185/292.77, Was #9
Right Lane: Dave Richards Runs 6.884/97.38, Now #13; No Prior Run

Oh-for-two. Richards smoked 'em early, TJ a little later.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.338/261.17, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.363/231.75, Was #12
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.100/298.80, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.194/276.24, Was #10

Pedregon's car looked like a steam engine on the top end, white vapor spewing from the headers. Meanwhile, DeJoria went to the top of list at a relatively modest speed.

Alexis DeJoria's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.297/262.90 mph.

Looks like the steam engine left some "stuff" on the track, the Safety Safari heads for the shutdown area in the left lane.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.161/302.01, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.208/303.03, Was #11
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.163/300.33, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.155/288.21, Was #8

The "Grime Boss"-sponsored car went right down the lane just cleaned by the "Grime Boss" Safety Safari track crew. Nice side-by-side show for the crowd setting up a possible first-round matchup between the two.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.923/158.28, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.141/287.66, Was #7
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.147/294.37, Now #8; No Prior Run

Force rattled the tires and lifted before half track. Pedregon made it almost to the finish line, then dropped a cylinder and his car also did the steam engine trick when he lifted. he managed to push his way into the top half, setting up a [possible matchup with Courtney Force in round one.

The track crew checked, the track was clear.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.157/294.75, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.126/306.46, Was #5
Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 8.571/69.69, Now #15; No Prior Run

Head lost traction before the 330-foot marker. Worsham made a good run, but not his best. Head coasted through with an ET that gets him in the field, but way down at the bottom of the ladder.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.285/137.90, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.124/305.22, Was #4
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.669/202.97, Now #14; No Prior Run

Both cars hazed the tires at about the same time, around 300 feet out. Beckman was solidly in the top part of the field and lifted, but Tasca needed the run and did a good job of pedaling to salvage the run.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.659/178.42, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.123/297.35, Was #3
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.486/199.58, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.162/305.84, Was #11

Both had good launches, then both lost traction at almost the same, just before the 660-foot speed trap, Capps first.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.608/184.02, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.114/304.25, Was #2
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.128/300.20, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.140/305.91, Was #6

They were side-by-side to about 600feet, then Hagan started smoking the tires. Hight made a good run, improved slightly, stayed sixth.
