Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual Pep Boys NHRA Carolina Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dan Stevenson Runs 6.026/237.34, Now #8; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 8.222/119.87, Now #23; No Prior Run

5:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 86 degrees, relative humidity 63 percent, barometer 29.29 inches, adjusted altitude 3,481 feet, track temperature 113 degrees.

Martin left before the tree was activated in the first session today and Stevenson was pushed away withot making a run. Jim Laurita is on the bump spot at 6.306.

Martin's car was slow coming off the line, then started wagging its tail and he lifted. Stevenson made a good-looking run and he's in, for now anyway. Conditions should be a little better in this session, so the bump time should change several times.

Now Jay Payne is on the bump spot at 6.180.

Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.983/238.68, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.158/171.05, Was #22
Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.116/237.21, Now #16; No Prior Run

Both cars made full passes, but Smith was steadily leaving Lang further behind all the way down the track. Both bumped into the field, putting Payne and Bob Rahaim on the outside.

Von Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.619, 660ft-3.926/189.90 mph, 1,000ft-5.042.

Now Lang is on the bump spot at 6.116.

Left Lane: Michael Biehle Runs 6.127/243.55, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.078/147.15, Was #23
Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.344/230.76, Now #21; Best prior run: 26.832/148.33, Was #28

Both drivers improved substantially over the fir run today, but neither improved enough to get into the field.

Left Lane: Kevin Fiscus Runs 6.045/243.50, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.054/141.11, Was #24
Right Lane: Doug Winters Runs 6.264/214.76, Now #21; Best prior run: 12.308/68.80, Was #28

Fiscus made a good run to bump into the field Winters kept the front end pointed mostly doin the track on this run, but came up well short of the bump time.

Now Chip King is on the bump spot at 6.106.

Left Lane: Pete Farber Runs 5.996/240.94, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.668/224.17, Was #24
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.097/234.66, Now #17; Best prior run: 9.799/93.84, Was #28

It looked like Castellana's car made a hard move about 300 feet out and he came up just short of the bump time. Farber went right down the groove and into the top half of the field.

Now Gerry Capano is on the bump spot at 6.092.

Left Lane: Jim Laurita Runs 6.031/230.76, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.306/181.54, Was #24
Right Lane: Jim Bell Runs 6.087/218.37, Now #17; Best prior run: 8.369/123.32, Was #28

Laurita ran away from Bell early in their runs and he got in the field. Bell came up a little over a hundredth short of the field.

Now Jim Whiteley is on the bump spot at 6.072.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.388/231.48, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.180/236.05, Was #24
Right Lane: Chris Juliano Runs 6.190/229.51, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.864/228.77, Was #27

Juliano shook and had to backpedal, killing his ET. Payne did the same, had the same outcome.

Left Lane: Bob Rahaim Runs 6.068/236.84, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.129/237.25, Was #23
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 6.127/235.06, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.072/235.27, Was #16

Rahaim improved, knocking Whiteley out of the field. He replaced Whiteley on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.111/242.58, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.106/243.72, Was #21
Right Lane: Bill Glidden Runs 5.979/236.55, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.057/232.47, Was #15

King failed to improve, but Glidden notched another five (his first was at Indy this year) and he moved well up in the field. Whiteley stays on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Gerry Capano Runs 12.364/93.26, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.092/236.13, Was #19
Right Lane: Eric Latino Runs 6.019/241.02, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.041/240.98, Was #13

Capano is the last car in line with a chance to bump Whiteley. However, he lost traction and fishtailed violently, forcing him to lift. Latino improved nicely, moved up three spots.

Looks like the track workers spotted some oil in Capano's lane, they are straddling a cleanup path that starts at the 330-foot marker and goes way down the track.

Left Lane: Jason Hamstra Runs 6.045/236.22, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.045/238.89, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 5.979/242.89, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.022/241.37, Was #11

6:30 p.m. That took awhile. Meanwhile, conditions keep improving and the track temperature is down to 107 degrees.

Hamstra matched his earlier ET to the thousandth, with a slightly slower speed. Janis improved nicely to move into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 9.554/99.92, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.017/246.17, Was #10
Right Lane: Steve Matusek Runs 5.941/245.05, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.961/245.18, Was #4

Coughlin slowed before half track. Matusek inproved slightly, stayed fourth.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.596/165.76, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.968/245.00, Was #5
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 6.754/151.48, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.894/246.08, Was #2

Smith had a good run going well past half track, then he slowed. Same with Rowe.

Rickie Smith's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.657, 660ft-3.969/177.72 mph, 1,000ft-5.300.
Danny Rowe's incremental times: 60ft-0.985 sec., 330ft-2.616, 660ft-3.947/174.75 mph, 1,000ft-5.347.

Left Lane: Don Walsh Runs 5.943/249.35, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.919/246.39, Was #3
Right Lane: Steven Whiteley Runs 5.898/245.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.875/246.26, Was #1

Both made good runs, neither improved.
